[Chapter Four: The Body]

>> >> >>

All Beth wanted to do was go home and cry, but Jonathan wasn't. Joyce had refused to get into the car and so Jonathan kept trying to convince her, from his car, which so far wasn't working.

"Mom, please get in the car." Jonathan yelled out the window.

"No, no, I need to think, just take your sister and go home." Joyce answered from the sidewalk.

Beth leaned her head against the window, as Jonathan parked the car and got out, racing after their mother. Beth groaned and reluctantly got out of the car, following them.

"Mom!" Jonathan called after her, running across the street.

"No. Just go home." Joyce shook her head.

"This is not an okay time for you to shut down." Jonathan lectured.

"Shut down?" Joyce shook her head.

"We have to deal with this. We have to deal with the funeral." Jonathan protested.

"The funeral? For who? That thing back there?" Joyce shook her head.

"Jon." Beth tried to grab his arm.

"No. Beth." Jonathan shook his sister off of him, "Let me get this straight. Will, that's not his body, because he's in the lights, right? And there's a monster in the wall? Do you even hear yourself?"

"Jonathan!" Beth yelled at him, "You're being an asshole."

"No, Beth. I'm not. I'm sorry but I don't believe you because the evidence that our brother is dead is right in front of us." Jonathan turned towards her.

"Look. I know it sounds crazy. I sound crazy." Joyce responded, "You think I don't know that? It is crazy. But I heard him, Jonathan! He talked to me. Will is talking to me! And he's out there and he's alone and scared."

Beth looked around to see people beginning to halt in their steps to stare at them. Beth had grown used to the weird looks that people gave them but she really didn't want to deal with them right now.
