Closing my room door behind me, I undressed myself, took a deep breath and walked towards the mirror that's sitting in one corner of the room. Ever since I was brought here, I had been avoiding mirrors at all cost as I was afraid of the stranger in the mirror that would be staring back at me. But tonight, something in me is telling me that it's time that I stop running.
There I was, standing in front of the mirror, looking at the girl in the mirror that I could barely recognize anymore. The girl in the mirror seems so weak and fragile, her underweight body covered in scars and a long line across her stomach where it was slashed by the cold-blooded outpost leader with a blade a week ago just for her sadistic pleasure and the dark circles under her eyes, implying the countless amount of sleepless nights she's had, being constantly haunted by fear.
Is that really me in the mirror? I guess the girl I used to be was now gone, forever.
Feeling crushed by the image that stood upon me, I took a deep breath, wiped the tears off my cheeks and slipped on my nightwear to cover up all my scars before heading to bed.
As I curled myself into a ball under the covers in the darkness, all kinds of thoughts and memories start to resurface from the back of my head including the ones of the events that occurred an hour ago in the library. Keeping me awake.
Was that really Ms Venable? She's always the woman of power, the one whom I fear and despise so much. And who knew she has this side to her, this side that's so...human?
I sighed in frustration as more questions start to pile up in my head. That's when I heard a creak from the room door and my body froze.
Could it be Ms Venable? If it's not her who could it be? Mallory?
And it is only in that moment, I realized I never really got to find out who the other occupants are in this outpost. I was always told to stay in my room during the day and only allowed to leave my room when everyone is in theirs. I was like Venable's secret pet that has been kept in the shadows for as long as I could remember.
I was grounded from my thoughts as I hear footsteps slowly approaching me. My heart pounds faster with every footstep and at this point, my body is too stiff for me to react. So instead of jumping out of bed to see who that person is, I kept my eyes shut and pretended to be asleep.
Trying my best to keep my breathing steady, I felt someone getting under the covers behind me. This person then proceeds to move its warm body closer to mine, letting out soft groans in the process, and slipping a hand around my waist to spoon me.
Still contemplating on what my next move should be, a faint scent of lavender tickles my nose, finally revealing the identity of the unknown individual behind me, Ms Venable.
Slowly leaning into my ears, I could now feel her hot breath brushing against the left side of my face.
"Thank you for making me feel something again Charlotte" She whispers softly into my ears, cuddling me a little tighter.
Knowing that she was the one holding me, I blushed a little as my body starts to relax. Still pretending to be asleep, I slowly placed my hand on top of hers.
That was the last thing I remember before drifting off into deep sleep in her warm embrace.
For some reason, tonight, her presence makes me feel safe, secure and inhaling her signature lavender scent has brought peace into my troubled mind, allowing my body to finally rest for the first time.
