The three of them snapped their head towards the direction of the door and their eyes are now on me.

Expecting to see a gun pointing at Mr Langdon, I was surprised to see that Ms Mead is pointing the gun at Ms Venable.

Without a second thought, I quickly placed myself in between Ms Venable and the gun.

"Don't hurt her" I said, in a steady voice while stressing every word and glaring at Ms Mead.

"Well well well, look what we have here. The bitch's pet" Mr Langdon says sarcastically with a slight smirk on his face.

"DON'T YOU DARE CALL HER THAT!!" I didn't know what got to me, but I simply can't allow anyone to disrespect her like that.

I did a quick turn with my head to check if Venable is okay when suddenly, a loud bang rang in my ears and I felt pain spreading across my chest and blood was slowly seeping through the fabric. As the bullet had punctured my lung, I sputtered and coughed up some blood as I gasped for air.

Feeling shaky and weak, I turned around and held onto Ms Venable's shoulders to steady myself in front of her so that I would still be shielding her. Tears started to form in her eyes as they met my glassy ones and she reached out her right hand to caress my left cheek gently.

"Why Charlotte? Why are you doing this? Why?" she whispered in a shaky voice with tears threatening to roll out from her eyes.

"I-..."

I was about open my mouth to reply when I heard a second loud bang.

My body now feels a little too heavy for my legs to support and I collapsed to the ground.

Starting to feel cold, my body shivered uncontrollably and I can't seem to breathe no matter how much air I tried taking in.

"No no no no no, Charlotte, don't leave me, please" Slowly losing the overall controls of my body, Venable knelt down and positioned me on her lap with her hands cupping my cheeks. With my breathing now shallow, I looked up at Venable and feeling the light taps of her tears on my face.

Please don't cry dear Venable. Please don't waste those tears on me, it's not worth it.

Seeing you cry not only reminded me of the special moments we shared at the library that night but also of how useless I currently am because this time, I can't do anything to make you feel better but to watch and it breaks my heart.

Fixing my eyes on hers, I summoned my last breath to tell her my final words.

"I-I...l-love y-you"

"I love you too Charlotte, I really do, so please, keep your eyes on me. It's going to be alright, we'll be alright" Tears welled from deep inside her and streamed down her cheeks.

She leaned in and planted a small kiss on my forehead with her trembling lips and forced a sad smile on her face.

Tears were rolling down my face as I kept my eyes on her for as long as I could.

She is beautiful, she really is God's finest creation. If only we had met before the apocalypse, then everything would have been so different.

As the surrounding starts to grow darker and darker, another loud bang rings in my ears and I felt her hands loosening its grip from my face.
