I opened my eyes weakly and a familiar ceiling came into view as my eyes slowly adjusted.
How long have I been out for? What day is it?
Pain shot through my whole body as I tried to sit up from my bed, reminding me of the wounds on my arms. I groaned and took a deep breath before gathering all my energy to get myself out of bed.
I took some pills from my nightstand and downed them before checking the time on the clock. 8:00pm. For some reason, the outpost seems to sound more lively than usual today. It sounds like there was a party being held at the common room and the occupants were having lots of fun. But of course, non of that was my business.
Still feeling weak, I sighed and made my way to the armchair to warm myself up a little by the fire.
I was staring at the dancing fire to distract myself from all the noise coming from the common room when the echoes of laughter outside was suddenly replaced with dead silence, followed by the disturbing sounds of people coughing, gagging and gasping for air.
Something is definitely wrong.
Sensing danger, I started to feel uneasy and my guts were telling me that I should at least find out what's happening. With that, I threw on my robe, being extra careful so it doesn't rub against the bandages too much and I headed out.
Still on the second floor, I made my way to the mezzanine where I could overlook the whole common area.
What I saw was terrifying. Lifeless bodies were scattered everywhere, bodies of people in purple and grey outfits, in the common room that was covered in vomit everywhere and there was an overwhelming stench that made me sick to my stomach.
Scanning the room, my heart dropped when I spotted Mallory's body among the others. Even though we weren't close, she was my only friend in this lonely outpost which I am very grateful for but had never really gotten a chance to let her know how much I appreciate her.
And now I'll never get a chance to do so.
Still trying to process the horrifying scene that was right in front of my eyes, familiar thuds echoed down the hallway, pulling me back to reality. I held my breath and crouched down a little so I wouldn't be seen.
There I saw Ms Venable and her bodyguard entering the common room, both having satisfied looks on their faces.
"Now, that went off rather well, don't you think? Little messier than I would've hoped"
"Least we don't have to worry about cleaning up" The bodyguard replied with a chuckle.
"We shouldn't keep Mr Langdon waiting" was the last thing Venable said before they both turned around to leave the common room that's scattered with dead bodies.
Mr Langdon? Is that the representative from The Cooperative? Are they going to kill him because of what's stated in the letter? I have got to get to him before they kill him.
I followed the sound of their footsteps and was now standing in front of a room door. I placed my ear against the door to try to find out what's happening on the other side of the door. I could hear a man's voice which I assumed to be Mr Langdon's and Ms Venable's.
"You think this is funny?" She asks sarcastically.
"I think I'm impressed Ms Venable, I wasn't sure you had it in you. You've passed the test. You are perfect for the sanctuary" He said in a calm, impressed voice.
"Ms Mead" and I heard a gun being cocked.
"I won't do that" he suggests.
There was a silence before Venable repeats herself again.
"Ms Mead"
Feeling the tension that's building up through the door, I took that as a cue for me to enter the room and I pushed the door open with all the energy I had in me.
