12:54 a.m.
Veronica sat in the lobby of the hospital impatiently waiting for Venus as her leg continuously bounced up and down. Almost two hours had managed to pass before Veronica began racking her brain for the possible reasons Venus could have for not showing up yet. Finally deciding to call again, she was surprisingly met with her voicemail. Panicking slightly, Veronica opened her phone and quickly ordered an uber to pick her up.
On the way to her apartment complex, a not so good feeling set in the pit of her stomach. This made her realize that something off was going on and she was determined to figure out what it was for the sake of her new, yet good friends. Silently praying that Keith comes out okay, afterwards she began wondering what else this night had in store because she definitely wasn't expecting to be in the middle of this situation currently. Finally arriving, Veronica jumped out of the car quickly walking up to the entrance and jogging past the front desk in the lobby, over to the elevator. The controls didn't seem to move fast enough for her as she smashed the button several times before the doors opened and closed with her inside. Doing the same with the second floor button, Veronica watched impatiently as the number one became number two and might as well have proceeded to run out of the elevator. The feeling in the pit of her stomach grew more and more as she neared Venus's door.
"V open up girl!" She yelled as she banged on the door twice with her fist. After no response, she went to bang again but was stopped by the sound of a knob turning behind her. The door across from Venus's swung open and out came a woman a few inches shorter than Veronica wearing all black. Her skin was a chocolate mocha complexion and her dark brown hair was straightened to perfection. However, the smile on her face left Veronica slightly puzzled but still almost taken back by her beauty.
"Is there a problem?" She asked politely with a tilt of her head.
Turning her attention onto the woman, Veronica replied, "No I'm just tryna get ahold of my friend miss."
Sensing the slight hostility, the woman's smile slowly became a frown as her eyebrows furrowed.
"I believe I heard her leave about a half hour ago if that helps at all."
"Hm. You sure? How you know it was her?"
"Yes I'm pretty sure. We came out into the hallway practically at the same time as I was on my way to take my trash out when I noticed her in tears and in a hurry to get somewhere, was there an emergency? Are you a friend of hers?"
"That's none of your business but yes I am. Now what color is her hair?"
"Dark brown?"
Veronica squinted her eyes slightly before continuing her interrogation, "Tall or short?"
"Pretty tall, way taller than me!" The woman replied with a giggle.
"Hm and what's your name?"
The woman stuck her hand out for a handshake, "Call me Kay. And yours?"
"Call me Vee. Thanks."
And with that Veronica turned and walked back down the hallway to the elevators as the woman went back into her apartment. She attempts to call Venus one more time before leaving but there was still no luck. However, the not so good feeling in the pit of her stomach couldn't help but grow the farther she walked away from Venus's door. Not knowing what else to do though, Veronica reaches the elevator doors and proceeds to walk right in as someone else is exiting it. Suddenly she receives an incoming call from Venus as she blows out a sigh of relief.
"Hey girl I was soo-!"
"Vee come back please! This bitch is cra-"
Veronica came to a halt as she made eye contact with the woman sitting behind the front desk. Just as the line went dead, she spun back around and vigorously ran full speed back to the elevator but when the doors didn't open five seconds after she pushed the button, she automatically headed for the side door on the right side of the elevator, to the stairs. The regular jogs around the neighborhood had been doing Veronica great justice as it didn't even take a full minute for her to get to the second floor. Her heart was already racing from the built up anxiety but it was really going haywire at this point. She was currently blaming herself for whatever was happening to Venus because she knew she may have been able to prevent it if she would've just listened to her gut in the first place.
In the midst of sprinting down the long hallway, a piercing scream followed by a gunshot came from the direction she was running toward. This only made her heart finally drop to her stomach and panic more than she has the entire night.
About a half hour away from the scene is Keith laying in a hospital bed wondering why he was where he was. He had just woken up to beeping noises and the light blinding him slightly. A nurse walked in to check on how he's holding up now that he's awake.
"What happened to me?"
The nurse had a sweet energy and smile to her as she placed Keith's tray of food on the mini table in front of him before explaining his condition.
"You've experienced a mild concussion along with a dislocated shoulder and a broken arm. You're bruised up pretty bad but fortunately, we were able to pop that shoulder back in place and you didn't end up in a coma. Because it could've been much worse from how the accident happened."
The word "accident" rang in Keith's ears as he knew it was the complete opposite of that. But how could he prove it?
"How long do I have to stay here?"
"We plan to keep you overnight just so we know for sure that you're good to go."
"Okay thanks."
Politely thanking the woman, she proceeded to give him a nod and a warm smile before exiting the room.
Attempting to sit up seemed to be a difficult task as his head pounded whenever he moved it. His arm was wrapped neatly in a cast while he noticed how his body was aching with every move he made. Deciding to continue laying, he reached for his phone that was already placed on top of the table in front of him. Before he could even unlock it, he saw the several missed calls from Venus from less than an hour ago.
His heart skipped a beat as he began worrying about her heavily. However, when he attempted to call her there was no use as her phone was going straight to voicemail. Now all he could think is something isn't right because she rarely ever lets her phone completely die. She'll keep it on airplane mode for as long as she can before she can find a charger, he thought. One of the many reasons he loves her, he thought to himself.
That's when he realized he needed to get to her place, and fast.
