The food court was filled with so many people, I had to slide my way through everyone, bumping into them. I reached over to Burger King and bought myself a meal, then went to go find a seat. There were so many kids walking by looking at me with wide eyes, one little kid ran over to me, "Do you work for Santa?" Her eyes were bright, she really believed. "Sure do." I replied back, cheerfully. The little girl started squealing with excitement. "Mommy, mommy," the little girl starts tugging on her mother's arm. "She works for Santa. She's one of the elves." The mother looked down at her daughter smiling, "Yeah she does." The little girl looked back over at me, and whispered in my ear, "Can you tell Santa I want my daddy to come home for Christmas." She pulled back and I looked her in the eyes, I could tell she was about to cry. Just by looking at her, I knew I was about to cry as well. I looked back at the mother, she obviously knew what her daughter asked for, I didn't know what to say.
"Um, I can definitely let him know." that was all I could say. The little girl smiled again, "Thank you!" She took her mother's hand and walked away.
My shift was starting back up so I had to get back down to the first floor. Kim was waiting for me in the office, "Kassie, please sit for a minute." Before I had the chance to sit, I started to panic. "Kim, please tell me I still have a job. Please don't fire me, it's only my first day..." she put her hand up, "Kassie, I'm not firing you." She started to laugh. "So?" Kim gestured to the chair, "Kassie please sit." This time I complied.
"You're doing a great job here, even for your first day. I had a few parents come to me and said how helpful and kind you were to their children." I didn't know what to say, so I just sat there and waited for her to talk some more. "Listen, I was thinking that we could have you here as a full time Elf for Santa's Village?" My eyes widened, "Wait? You want me to be a full time elf?" I basically just repeated what she said, "What about Joey?" Joey was the full time elf here for the past three years, he was always so elf like and loved helping the children. There was one year he even brought them around the mall and sang Christmas songs with them all. "Joey will be leaving us this year, he has found himself a new full time job." I couldn't believe that Joey was actually leaving. So Kim thought it would be a great idea to have me fill in? "Kim this is an amazing offer, truly!" I looked down at my feet, what do I say?
"Kassie, just let me know by next week." I nodded my head.
Once my shift was over, I took out my phone and texted Hannah that I was on my way back to the apartment.
Me: "So I was offered to be a full time elf"
Hannah: "that's great . R u gonna take it?"
Me: "not sure"
Hannah: "I think you should"
I put down my phone and go into my car. I had to wait a few minutes for the car to actually start, this car is getting old and pretty soon it's going to stop working. Just hopefully not now.
