Everything was pretty good today at work, the normal crowd of kids wanting to see Santa, getting their picture taken. That was until his girlfriend showed up. For some reason I had a bad feeling.
"Kassie, we need to talk." She said, bad feeling. Instead of chickening out I went over to her. "Everything okay?" I asked. She didn't look too happy and I was afraid that she was going to start a fight. I don't think it would look good though, since I'm dressed as an elf and there were a lot of kids around. Nothing says 'Spirit of Christmas' like an Elf getting into a fight.
"It's about Clay!" She said nonchalantly. Okay?! "Right. And what about him?" She didn't seem too mad, but I should still be prepared just in case she decided to beat me up.  "I told him I didn't want him to see you."
"Why would he want to see me?" I think I knew why, but I wasn't going to tell her. It's as if she already knew, she doesn't seem to believe me. "Clay still has feeling for you. I mean you were pretty much his first love."
"We're over! We have been for a year. He's with you. And he seems happier!" As much as I hate to admit it, he did seem happier with her. But again, we're over! At this point it didn't even matter.
"He's not happy with me." She looked upset, "I can see it in his eyes. Kassie he's still in love with you."
"I doubt it!" That's all I can say.
"Kassie, He does. And there isn't anything I can do about it. I told him to stay away from you." I feel bad. Again. I'm always hurting people. "I'm sorry Riley, I really am. But don't worry about it, I'm over him!" I tried reassuring her.
"I told him we needed a break." She what??
"Wait?! What happened?!"
She looked down at the floor, "I need some time to think. I love him, but I just don't know what to do anymore?" There was a look of defeat on her face.
"I'm really sorry Riley." What else is there to say? It always seems to be my fault. Whatever I do or say, I'm to blame. I'm tired of being the cause for everyone's sadness and anger.
"I've decided to move away for awhile. I can't seem to be in the same town as him anymore. I wouldn't want to run into him."
"You're leaving?"
"Yeah. I'll be coming back eventually, I just don't know when?!"
I'm always to blame. And now she's leaving because she doesn't want to be near him. Like me. I can't be near him but at the same time I do.
