Chapter 8

I never got to try the ice-cream as a disbelieving gasp filled the room's previous silence, effectively shattering the intimacy between Caleb and I.

"Get the hell away from her!" An angry voice commanded from the doorway.

Caleb and I jumped apart, the spoon of ice-cream landing with a splat onto the tiled floor. I reluctantly turned my head to face the intruder.

"Riley? What in the f-"

"Miss Williams. We have a guest with us so I'd suggest that you mind your language." I ordered, half embarrassed and half annoyed that she had interrupted our moment.

Wait, what? I was annoyed? I should be relieved! I had a caring, thoughtful boyfriend who would never cheat on me. What was I doing?

"Are you kidding me Riley? Him?" Naomi asked in clear disgust, staring daggers at Caleb.

Forgetting Cody completely, I felt white hot rage begin to consume my mind.

"What Naomi? What's wrong with Caleb? He's sweet, funny, kind-"

"And he's a nobody," she finished, drawing out her words.

Of course, this point always had to be brought up. It was the point I had been debating about with myself for weeks.

"So? We were all nobodies at one point in our lives? What makes us different?"

"We will be remembered," she stated, gesturing between the two of us.

A sickeningly loud silence went around the room, flooding all my senses. I had nothing to say to that and Naomi knew that.

"You," Naomi spat, pointing a long manicured finger at Caleb. "Security has been called as well so don't you dare try anything. You better leave before I find out who you are or I swear, I will ruin you."

And from one look at her icy blue eyes, you knew she wasn't kidding.

About to give up, I looked over to Caleb. I saw the hard set of his jaw, the steely resolve in his green eyes, his clenched fists turning pale by his sides.

He wasn't going to give up without a fight. So neither was I.

"Caleb is actually staying the night," I fired defiantly, looking Naomi dead in the eyes. "And since I own this house, you can't do anything about it."

I strode up to Caleb and stood by his side, crossing my arms across my chest.

Naomi's nostrils flared as she looked at us. Her face was growing redder and redder by the second.

"What will Cody think?" She hissed with a tone of finality.

I swallowed hard but held my stance. "Cody will think that I'm a good person giving a person a place to sleep for the night. There's nothing more, nothing less. And if you don't believe me, that's your loss."

I had to remind myself to tread lightly. I didn't want to hurt her. Even if what she had said made me furious, Naomi was still one of my closest friends and manager. I knew she always did what she thought was best for me and this was just another one of those times. I couldn't hate her even if I tried.

"Which was why you guys almost kissed?"

I knew I couldn't worm myself out of this one. I looked over to Caleb for moral support.

His face was blank, no emotion showing. His eyes had lost their brilliant spark and the curve of his lips had vanished, leaving behind a hard line. Was this him giving up?

I sucked in a huge gust of stale air and exhaled slowly. Moment of truth.

"I have no idea what you're talking about. I was not about to kiss him."

Naomi gave me a fierce look as Caleb continued to remain silent.

"Really Riley. I thought you were a better actress," she scoffed, eyeing the close proximity between Caleb and I.

I immediately jumped away from him.

"Even if we were to kiss, which would never happen, it would mean absolutely nothing to me. I would and could never date a nobody, let alone love them. He means nothing to me," I lied through gritted teeth.

A satisfied looking Naomi smirked and checked her phone. I took the chance to look at Caleb, silently pleading him to understand just how false my statement was.

An indescribable emotion flashed in Caleb's blank green eyes, but it was gone so quick I wasn't sure if it had even been there in the first place.

I wished he'd show some sign that meant that he knew that it was all a lie. If was disconcerting to see Caleb so.... Empty.

"Well, security is coming up right now. I'd suggest you to get a move on, boy. Miss Grant doesn't need the likes of you in her life. She's one of the most important people in the world and you? Well... You get my point."

Even I felt a sharp sting at her words; it was just reinforcing the lie I had said earlier.

"No need. I was just leaving. I saw a nice hotel around the corner that should suit all my needs for the night. Thank you for the offer anyway Miss Grant. Oh, I can assure you Miss, that I feel exactly the same about Miss Grant. I was stupid to even consider the possibility. Goodnight Miss Grant and Miss Williams," Caleb replied curtly before turning on his heel and leaving, the door slamming behind him.

"I have to admit, he may be a nobody, but he sure can speak like a somebody," Naomi said loftily. "Hey I'm making a quick snack, want one?"
