--  Thank you for letting me know  --

Laurent stared,

His phone dropped

To the floor.

His mind blank,

Fuzzy round the edges.

White noise,

Nothingness.

His eyes,

His mind

Could grasp nothing,

His heart

Couldn't catch his breath.

** Lau ? **  Boss asked.

Nothing.

Her face in front of his face,

Distraught.

** Laurent ?

Are you OK ? **

He wasn't, she knew.

A lone tear ran down his face.

--  They ...... um ...... --

He couldn't speak, breath right now.

But he could feel.

His voice,

His breaths,

His heart,

Not his own, it seemed.

** Sit, c'mon, sit down **

Boss insisted.

Water, a glass of water.

She knew

What happened today.

--  Peter ......  --

** Where is he ? **

--  He was there.

He, um ...... --

**  Why didn't you go ? **

--  I couldn't ...... --

He looked at her,

Waiting expectantly.

His voice,

His legs,

His heart,

His daughter,

Gone.

--  Accidental death.

Her life meant nothing to him,

To them ? --

** Oh, Lau ..... **

Water, more water.

** But, surely ..... ** she started.

--  It's done, it's over.  --

**  Isn't that enough ? **

--  Ya'd think  --

His head, in his palms now,

More grief,

Splitting the air in two.

A guttural noise

Emanated from his body.

--  "I" feel bad.

"I" feel guilty.

Why do I need him to suffer more ?
