We arrive to the rooftop an hour later. Sitara has bombed Marcus with questions as to where we are and when are we going to be there. She's saying it's urgent and we're honestly starting to get worried. Wrench parks the van inside the parking garage and we make our way to the roof. As we get up there, Sitara appears out of nowhere and takes us to a secluded corner of the roof. She starts to explain that she found more of those shards we had studied in the garage a while ago. These shards are black in colour though. I feel a sinister energy move through the shards. I won't touch them. Mortals may be safe, but I'm not taking the risk. As I stand there staring at the shards, Sitara notices the mask I'm wearing. "Where'd you get that?" she asks and before I can say anything Wrench beats me to it. "I made it for her when she asked. She has her reasons, I'm sure," he says and Sitara nods. "Can I show you all something?" I ask. Everyone turns to look at me, even Ray and Josh are interested. The moon illuminates the night in a beautiful manner, the water under Pier 39 looks calm, so calm that even a single droplet would disturb it. I look back at the group and take of the mask, letting the moonlight hit my face. To my surprise and shock none of them gasp, no screaming, no yelling, no nothing. "I don't see the problem," says Wrench. Marcus nods beside him and strokes the stubble on his chin. Sitara stands up and takes a selfie with me. Josh shrugs and goes back to his laptop, while Ray downs another beer. "There may be a gash on your cheek that clearly shows your teeth but it's fine. The left side of your non-existent nose might be a problem though. I'd just say good makeup if I just saw a glimpse of you on the street. Some folk would love to be able to do this with makeup on Halloween," Sitara gleams. Wrench nods furiously and Marcus takes a picture of him, which results in the two men wrestling. Sitara and I look on for a while until I decide to break the fight. I pick both men up and put them back down. They look at me like they just saw a ghost, Ray and Josh are also perplexed. Sitara is laughing her ass off like this is nothing new to her. While we stand there the shards start emitting a black fog and I panic taking a few steps back. Once I'm further away from them, the fog disolves and it's like nothing happened at all. I put the mask back on and stand next to Wrench and Marcus again. Nothing happens and we look at each other confused. "There's some sinister power moving through those shards. I'd rather toss them into the bay and never see them again. Then I'd go for a beer," I say as I back away a little more from the black shards. "Here, have a bottle while we deal with the shards," Ray says as he opens a beer bottle for me. I take it and lower my mask to down it in one go. "We'll see you here in a few minutes. It's probably best we keep these in a locked safe instead of just dumping them into the bay," Josh says and collects his laptop. I nod and they head down to who-knows-where.
A couple minutes later...
I've been feeling a little anxious for some reason. It's like I should be somewhere else. Like something or somebody needs me. The others aren't back yet but I have a feeling I'll need to leave a message and bolt. What is something these guys would notice but not anyone else? Why am I even thinking that I need to hide my tracks? I'm not wanted nor am I dodging authorities. Wait... what's that noise? It sounds like a horse. And it's coming this way. As I'm up on the roof thinking to myself, I can hear the sound of hooves hitting the pavement. I look down the street and there really is a horse galloping towards the Pier. That's... no it can't be... That's my horse! When I finally gain control of my shocked legs, I dart towards the stairs down from the rooftop. The last few flights of stairs I jump down and zoom past the group returning to the roof. "Hey, where are you going?!" Sitara yells after me and they all follow me out of the building. "My friend, she's back. My old friend," I mumble to myself as the group catches up to me. "What friend are you talking about? There's no one here," says Marcus in between sharp breaths. "Oh, there is. You just can't see her," I say as I point down Pier 39. "There's no one there," says Ray, sounding a bit irritated. "I'll show you. Get yourselves a ride," I say as I start walking down to the pier. Not once has my sight left my friend's gaze. There she stands, in all her dark glory on display. Mortals can only see her when she wants them to or when I touch her. It's a special kind of skill she has. So many things we've been through together over the years. How could I forget her this easily? I step onto the pier, more specifically the part of the pier that is a bit wider compared to the rest of it. My friend looks at me, I sure hope she remembers me. "Hey," I say to her. She nods her head a couple times. I think she remembers, thank gosh.
