It's been a couple days, Sally has taken a liking to Marcus and Sitara. She's trying to help them figure out how to get the magic out of my bracelet and if we can use the shards of energy Marcus has been finding all around the city. Ray and Josh have been finding more tags and sending me and Wrench to cover them up. Little by little it seems we're getting closer to figuring out what Zalgo's plan is but as the city gets more hectic, our jobs are far from over. When the night falls the parademons start moving. Also as the night falls, my appearance gets worse and worse. It's not only affecting me it's starting to be noticeable by others. It's now the day of Dusan Nemec's trial for various misconducts. It's on every news outlet in the country. Every channel and every programme is talking about it. You cannot escape it, even if you wanted to. There's radio stations, podcasts and even live streams of it. I'm getting weaker by the day but I need to keep moving, for Wrench and Sally. I can't give up now, I just need to figure out the shards and bracelet and I could have my powers and strength back. I just need a little more time...
"Hey, guys come here! I think Sally has figured the shards out," Sitara yells from the other side of the Hackerspace. We all rush to see what's going on. Sally is sitting cross-legged on one of the work benches and is fiddling with a couple shards. The shards are different in colour and seem to be neutral, nothing is happening. "Okay, I need you (y/n) and only you. Normal humans have no effect on the shards and the shards don't affect them. What I need you to do is come close and poke each of these different coloured shards. I'm leaving out the red and black because you've seemed very wary of them so that should tell us something about said shards," she says and gets down from the table. The rest of the group gets behind some bulletproof glass and Sally tells me in which order to poke the shards. Yellow, green, orange, blue and violet. Shouldn't be that hard. I focus on the shards and poke them in the correct order but notice myself getting tired after each shard I poked. The last two shards I can barely poke before I get so tired I can no longer stand. Wrench comes over to help me up and for me to get support off him. We only then notice that the shards are circling around themselves. Like there's an invisible force in the middle that they're circling around. The shards are emitting strong electric pulses and it seems to overheat the Hackerspace computers. "We have to stop them! Those shards are going to fry our servers!" Ray yells over the growing noise. I urge Wrench to help me get close. He hesitates but I already start moving towards the spinning shards. Wrench lets go of my waist and keeps a hold on my left hand, while slowly creeping up behind me in case something happens. I get close enough to the shards and let go of Wrench's hand to put both of my hands in front of me. The shards react and stop in their tracks. The shards slowly line up in front of my hands and form a zig-zagging line. The violet shard starts glowing more and it shoots a ray of light into the blue one. The blue one starts glowing and in turn shoots the orange shard. Orange shard shoots the green and it in turn shoots a ray into the yellow shard. Now all the shards are glowing and forming themselves in front of my right hand. "I suggest you all duck," I say only a moment before the shards shoot a ray of light into my right arm. The group ducks just in time and I can only see the shards. The floating shards are losing their colour and my right hand is shaking. The whole thing is over in a couple minutes. The shards, now gray in colour rearrange and float sideways before they turn to dust. "What the fuck was that!" yells Ray. Josh is on the verge of tears and so is Sally. The two are hugging each other in fear. Marcus and Sitara are in shock and Wrench is the first to react and hug me. "You can't scare us like that!" he yells into my ear. That's the first time I look at my right arm. It's faintly glowing in all the colours the shards were before they faded. I don't feel weak anymore. What did the shards do to me? Wrench is looking at my arm now too. The rest of the group comes close too. The colours are doing swirls and circles on my arm. It's like they're dancing under my skin but I feel nothing. The colours go up and down my arm a bit and finally settle down into what looks like a flowery tattoo someone would have. "That's neat," says Sitara. "Do you still feel tired?" asks Sally in a very hopeful manner. "Actually no, I feel very relaxed and energized," I tell her and she gleams. "So it worked. I figured out the shards. The yellow, green, orange, blue and violet are the colours you want to infuse first. Because they give you the base to infuse red and eventually black. They're essentially a power boost. In this case it gives you more time to figure out the bracelet," Sally explains and shows me her notes, some of the points she has were from Wrench and Marcus. This is incredible. How come she's gotten this much info on something that shouldn't exist in this world. As I'm reading through the notes it becomes evident that these shards are going to be important later. I can't defeat Zalgo alone but I can't infuse every shard I see either. "I think we should collect all the shards we see and you could infuse them when you need the energy boost. We still need to figure out the bracelet though," Sally says and scratches her head. "Thanks, kid. This will get us ahead by a mile," I say and pat her head. Wrench slips a piece of paper into my hand and runs out of the Hackerspace. "What was that?" asks Marcus while he gets closer. I know for a fact he wants to know what the paper says. I look at him with a face that makes him look elsewhere and start fiddling with a tool off the workbench. I walk towards the staircase while slowly opening the neatly folded paper. I go up the stairs while reading the message.
~~I need to talk to you about something, As Soon As Possible. I'll be at the place we visit frequently~~
I need to make my way down the street then, to his garage. We rarely go anywhere else because of some certain people. I like his garage though, it's very cozy and it has a few little things that tell me a bit more about him. Anyhow I'm very curious as to what it'll be about. I put the piece of paper in my pocket and walk over the crosswalk on a green light. I pass by a couple street corners until I get halfway to my destination. There's a group of people flocking a sales window. It's a TV and radio store and as I get closer I can hear the programme on the TVs. It's about the Dusan Nemec trial, and honestly I'd love to not hear anything about it anymore. I know how gross the man is, why remind me so many times? As I try to go around the group, one of them calls to another group who come running to join. They're now taking up the whole sidewalk. The moment I try to figure out how to get around them, from the corner of my eye I can see something light blue glowing in the alley. I turn to look at it and realize it's my friend (fr/n). It was her eyes I saw glowing in the dark. "Follow me (y/n). Your friend isn't at his garage anymore. He moved to a rooftop a few blocks from here. I'll guide you there and you'll be okay from there." She says this and takes off towards the other end of the alley. I nod and start following her.
10 minutes later...
I say bye to my friend and make my way up some emergency ladders. Once I get up to the highest roof it's already evening. I can't see Wrench anywhere but I see a tiny picnic blanket. I get closer to the blanket and get a little nervous all of a sudden. Where's Wrench? He better not be captured or killed. As I'm thinking of the worst possible scenarios in my head, I don't hear the door to the roof opening behind me. Wrench is in fact still alive and well just even more nervous, so he hid in the maintenance room to wait. He moves closer and starts talking. "I'm sorry to disturb but can we sit down now?" Wrench has a little bit of a hesitation before he taps me on the shoulder. I turn around to find the familiar mask and man it belongs to. I sigh from relief and sit down on the blanket. He sits down next to me and pulls a basket out from under some pillows. There's not really anything fancy, just some beer and a few packages of cookies. Just special enough for me. We just sit there in a little silence. The basket is untouched and we're not hurrying to start on it. "So... It's hard to say this but I'll try," Wrench starts and then takes off his mask. The sun has set and the full moon is up on the sky. It illuminates the roofs quite well and the stars are even trying to shine through despite all the city lights. I take off my mask too and turn to look at him fully. I poke his forehead and he continues. "I know it's been hard lately and it's probably going to get worse. But I truly think we might be able to make this work. You're a supernatural being that cannot be killed with anything we have here. I'm not invincible but if I have you, I might as well call myself unstoppable. I don't know if the feeling is mutual but... I hope it is. Can you give us a chance?" he ends his question by rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. I inch closer to him and stare him right in the eyes. "You look pretty under moonlight," he says suddenly and then starts trying to backtrack. "I didn't mean... I swear I... I don't know," he trails off at the end. "You don't need to apologize. It's refreshing to get a compliment about my face instead of the screaming I'm used to," I say and hug him. He hugs me back and we stay like that for a while. "So, what's your answer?" he asks and he looks at me hopeful. I just decide to give a non-verbal answer. I cup his cheeks and kiss him quickly. "That answer your question," I say as I hug him a little more. Wrench nods enthusiastically and hugs me tighter. "You know, when the mask is off... I'm not Wrench, I'm Reggie," he says matter-o-factly. I just hum into his shoulder. "I'm just (y/n). You're welcome to come up with a great nickname though," I say and before hearing his answer I fall asleep.
