He hadn't talked to Eve since his outburst, the one he deeply regretted. Not just because he enjoyed her presence but now he was stuck attempting to study alone. On his own, oh boy.
He dropped out of football because he knew he needed to study more. Plus he always wanted to be in the medical field. Clearly it didn't sit well with his farther who was always pushed him to play, play, play. Honestly he never liked it. Hopefully no one would notice his gash on his right knee. If the did, It was an "accident"
His father was a to large and powerful man in his eyes to say anything. Its the typical cases. The victim never stands up or says anything until it was forced out of him. The the its denied and becomes to messy. He would rather just leave it as it is.
Absent. The chair next to him was absent. This was a first definitely, she could be sick or traveling. People are absent everyday, it's normal.
Absent, Absent. That's three days now.
The days go by slower. He knows Eves friends so when that last bell chimes he pulls his bag over his shoulder and walks over to the table. He never really analyzed his ideas and winged them. But this one he thought over and over as the walked down the halls. Giving the three a startled shock as he sits down casually.
"Uh hi, I was wondering if you have seen Eve?" not what he planed to say at all but it sorta just came out. He would punish himself later.
"Why? Quinley questioned with one eyebrow up, She always scared him a bit and how sweet Evelyn was friends with her was beyond him. She was the girl you wouldn't cross paths with. But always had that sweet spot. So Quinley Lux was actually finding friends. Not the idea of people he had in mind.
He made up an excuse to want to find her,
"she's my study partner just wondering"
Wondering if they bought it he saw Ivy's face relax and Quinley's amusement went away. He heard Ivy say they had not heard from her but it was faint as his heart raced up a bit. He thought to himself, why does one girl who he might add, barely knows make his heart race pick up. She doesn't, he told himself. That was a lie and she knew it but would admit it.
He doesn't care. Why should he? He nodded and walked away from the table without a glance toward them. Not the worst people to associate himself with. But his friends left him seeing as he wasn't playing the game anymore. By that he was pushed out of that reputation. So friendless and hopeless Luke was alone
He wasn't expecting his feet to carry him back to the table but they did. Of course Ivy being Ivy let him enjoy lunch with them, Owen nodding and Quienly scoffing looking away.
He had been over to Eves only once for studying purposes of course but that was his plan, to see her. Now Luke and his reputation wouldn't do this normally. So there needed to be some sort of excuse. Homework answers will do.
Classes went slow as normal. Constant un-focusing of the class and getting brought back by the teachers disappointed glares, along with a few chuckles. The last bell rang and He made his way out of the school into the fresh air. November was approaching, the chilled air was always refreshing.
After about 20 minutes of walking he stumbled upon her driveway. His heartbeat picked up and his books clenched in his chest. He thought no one was home by the lingering no appearance. He turned his back when she opened the door.
Her eyes were red underneath and she looked drained. Really drained. He began to regret his decision when she cut him off.
"Luke? What are you doing here." He was the last person she thought would show up at the door. She hadn't talked to him since the library which now seemed like an over dramatic incident.
"Erm I needed help with the homework but-" He honestly thought his idea was horrible. He didn't even stop to think about why he was here and now this wasn't the ideal place. He blurted out that last bit.
"You came all this way for homework answers?" Now she was a bit aggravated. She wasn't even there today and the way she looked for god's sake she wasn't appealing to help him with homework answers.
After a few moments in silence he sighed and told her he was wondering why she hadn't been at school for days. Trying to make it seem like he wasn't really caring. But if he didn't care why would we be here right now. It was an awkward conversation when she told him she hadn't been feeling well and people get a cold or so commonly.
"Right well, get well of course and maybe we can get one or two lessons in again?' He knew he didn't need help anymore due to him actually being productive but it was worth a shot to get out of the humiliating trap he set up and walked right through.
She gave a faint smile and shut the door. He saw she was getting nervous as faint voices rose from the kitchen. Luke knew this sound all too well. Fighting. He noticed she changed the subject and quickly shut the door.
He didn't question it and walked off. Beating at himself for acting like a dork and going up to her door like he was 4 years old.
The rest of the night was uneventful. That was a relief that no one stumbled upon a conversation with him because he wouldn't know what to say. The fact that Eve looked like she was on death's door and her parents fighting made him feel a bit worried for her.
He remembers the night his parents approached him and dropping the news like a bomb. Divorce was never a fun time even as an only child. The switching back and forth every week. Anyways he didn't like the idea of his parents splitting up so the connecting between him and Eve was understandable. But he wouldn't tell her that, because he was the high lead football player. The cool kid. He didn't need this girl to mess this up. Oh but how wrong he was.
Many attempts to push it out of this mind because she was just a classmate, yes a classmate. Nothing more nor less. It would stay this way.
He had trouble sleeping but when he thought about it when was the last time he ever slept good. Tossing and turning the whole night. It was close to the haunting hour when he finally drifted off.
