I don't own RWBY. RWBY is owned by Rooster Teeth and was created by Monty Oum. I only own my OCs
"I never understood what you'd said to me way back then, Mom."
Adam Taurus stood underneath a tree, holding and staring at something in his hand as the moon in the dark night sky was the only source of light. Adam didn't need it, with him being a faunus
"I forgot I even grabbed this, but I guess some people never forget what truly matters to them. This... this is the last thing I have of you, Mom." Adam said softly as he stared at the blooming rose pendant in his hand
Adam finally took his eyes off of the pendant and stared at the moon, shattered into pieces. A single tear escaped Adam's eye before it, and any others that threatened to escape, were wiped away
"I wish you could be here with me. Seeing the good I'm doing. Abiding by the promise I made to you." Adam's voice croaked with barely restrained sadness as he continued to talk to no one
Adam didn't even bother to wipe away the tears that followed as he started to remember those days

"Adam, look at me." A female wolf faunus said to a young Adam Taurus, no older than 4, as he was messing around with the rocks on the ground
They were obviously in a mine of some sorts and not under the best conditions as they barely had any sort of bed, mostly just rags, same with their clothes. All of the other faunus were sleeping
The young Adam looked at the wolf faunus. "Yes, Mom?" He'd asked
"I need you to promise me something." Adam's Mom had told him
"What is it?" Adam's deep blue eyes widened with curiosity and excitement, but no other outward signs came about
"I need you to promise me that, no matter what, you'll never fall as far as these people and instead rise above them." Adam's mom said to Adam as she gave him a pendant of a blooming rose
Adam's face grew a toothy smile as he stared at his mom
"I promise."

"I when I was old enough to join the White Fang, I'd finally interpreted those words. Only, it was the wrong one. I understand what you meant now, Mom, but back then, I thought that rising above was taking away what they had and giving it to the faunus. And because of that, I thought I could never fall."

Adam woke up with no sign of his mother anywhere. Adam spent as much time as he could look, with what being forced to haul dust carts and all that
Adam was sure he'd find her once he went back to the faunus' sleeping quarters. And when he didn't, Adam started to become fearful. Adam didn't want to loose his mother, but it appeared as if that had just happened
He didn't bother looking any further. The empty spot next to him where his mom used to be accompanied him a few days before it was taken by another faunus with grey hair and fox ears. He also had blue eyes
The kid had tried to talk to Adam, but he'd ignored him as Adam was still mourning his mother
***
The same Adam took his eyes off the moon and stared out at the landscape of Mistral. Houses laid on the cliffs with lights lit in them. Adam imagined that, in one of those houses, a kid was growing up with a loving family, no problems in the world. Adam wished that could've been him
What would he have been then? Adam didn't know. Maybe he'd be a farmer or a mason. Maybe he'd work with dust or weave clothes for people. Or, maybe, he'd end up on the same path he's already went down
Adam scoffed at his thoughts. There was really no time to linger on that. What's in the past could never change, but the future could
"Only when I went to Beacon, found people who'd been nice to me, even when they found out about my faunus traits and my being in the White Fang, did I realize I had been falling ever since I killed my first person. I hadn't been rising above because I was destroying what was the source of so much suffering. I was falling because I was getting revenge, no matter what I'd told myself." Adam's blue eyes no longer had a hint of sadness in them, but rather of acceptance
"Well, Mom, I'm afraid I must go now. It was... a good talk, I guess. I hope you're doing well, no matter where you ended up."
Adam walked away from the cliff he was at back towards the house that he and his group were renting as he put the pendant in his pocket
***
Adam stared at the destroyed dust mine. He almost couldn't believe his eyes. White Fang members had picked him up shortly after, giving him fresh water and food, a place to sleep that wasn't rags on rocks, and proper clothes
Adam would go on to learn more intricate language. Learn how to fight and cook. How to read. One day, when he was at a library. The leader of the White Fang stepped into the library with two other faunus.
'His wife and daughter.' Adam remembered from the talks. He had, of course, hid since he didn't want to speak to any of them
Well, that didn't really work out as Ghira spotted him
"Blake, why don't you go over to young Adam over there? He likes books just like you do." Ghira had suggested. Blake looked uncomfortable, but followed anyway
Adam tensed when she sat down next to him. But, neither of them would talk for a while. Just sitting in an uncomfortable silence that seemed to choke Adam. That was until Blake finally broke the silence
"My name is Blake. What's yours?"
"... Adam."
***
Adam scoffed at the memory. Not out of resentment or because of the foolishness in it, but because of the good memories that followed after. He had allowed a smile because he'd liked the memory
Adam was laying in his bed currently reading a story that had brought on the memory in the first place. Adam looked around at the room. Wilt & Blush leaned on the dresser, quite a few books laid on the dresser with a mirror. A TV was situated in front of him with the door to his room by his head. Both the pendant his mom had gave him and the one Ruby gave him sat on the nightstand to his left along with a lamp
Adam smiled as he put his book on the nightstand, turned off the lamp and went to sleep, happy with the path he'd ended up on
Yeah yeah, it's not a full chapter and it's been forever. Well, I'd decided I wanted to do something before just getting into Volume 5 straight away. I would say sorry, but I don't think that's exactly appropriate. Anyway, I wanted to give more emphasis to the backstory of Adam and I feel that I've done that. There's not much to say here, so I'll just move onward
Love y'all and see ya later!
