SLEEP, DARLING
____________
EFFY BURIED HER HEAD IN HER ARMS THAT WERE RESTING ON HER DESK. President Mic was droning about adverbs and whatnot and her head was aching. She was sleepy and lunch was an hour away. That was good. She didn't want to have lunch. Plus, there'd be too many people and too much interaction.
She closed her eyes, but no sleep came. She had only slept for a handful of hours in three days and covered up those bags under her eyes with make-up. Her parents hadn't stopped arguing at all and their voices were getting too boisterous for her to handle and she was sitting in the farthest corner of her room with her hands covering her ears most of the weekend. It was the same old cycle. Get up, purposely miss breakfast because she didn't want to deal with her parents, do homework and go to sleep. And she had to endure all this alone because her parents had shipped her brother off to military school and they could barely talk often.
And that wasn't even the end of it. Back in their first year, when the dorm system was put to use, her parents didn't allow her to go. They said they wanted their daughter under their watch, "worried" something might happen to her. The teachers didn't argue much. Her parents were Pro Heroes, after all. In truth, her parents were afraid she'd run away, because she sure as hell would've. They didn't want their reputation to be spoilt by a "brat" like her.
Pushing, no, shoving the thoughts out of her head, she closed her eyes. If she couldn't sleep, pretending to sleep would be fine, too.
Bakugou stared at the back of her head. That was Aki Kaya. Her parents were pro heroes but she wasn't as strong as Bakugou was expecting. She was the kind of person who'd have a fling and date guys older than her. There was no solid proof about it, but there were rumors. His classmates hung out with her nonetheless. She always had a smile on and talked in a cheerful tone. She told people to call her Effy and when she was questioned, the interrogators were told that she just liked the name. In Bakugou's opinion, he thought she simply didn't like her name. She was agonizingly social, so much that it made him want to puke and she talked with everyone.
And she was pretty too. She had this signature look of hers, where she wore knee-high boots with too many buckles to count and they seemed heavy too; with a thick layer as soles. She wore kohl under her eyes and glistening blue button earrings.
There would always be some idiot out there who would randomly come along and confess to her, showering her with chocolates and flowers and love letters. She of course, rejected them with sugared words and the boys left with stupid smiles and broken hearts. Bakugou never thought much of her, feeling she was just another extra that would get in his way of climbing to the top. She was annoying and it would always tick him when she barged in and talked to Kirishima like they the best of friends. She would totally ignore his presence and somehow, Kirishima too, would forget about him.
Shifting his gaze from the back of her head to the chalk board, he clicked his pen and started taking down notes on adverbs. Occasionally, the explosive blonde would glance at the board and then keep his pen down, awaiting further opportunities to write something important down. Lunch rolled by and he watched as Mina had to shake Effy awake.
She felt a hand on her shoulder shake her and she waited for a few seconds before groaning. Her eyes were currently screwed shut; she was pretending to be asleep. Slowly groaning again, only for the sake of putting up the believable act of being asleep, she opened one eye with faux fatigue. Lazily getting up and stretching till she could feel the bones of her back crack, she looked up to see black orbs staring into her pale grey ones. Mina smiled, "Hi, Effy-chan!"
Blinking once and then twice to shake out the "sleep" out of her eyes, she flashed a tired smile, one that didn't really reach her eyes. The smile was carefully given, so as to not show any sign of fatigue and a want to sleep, even though none of it was going to come and hide all the overwhelming emotions trapped inside. "Hi, Mina."
"Let's go have lunch, no?"
"Ah, sorry, I actually wanted to have lunch with Kirishima-kun today."
Mina pouted but agreed--for who could resist that dazzling smile?

Bakugou stabbed the meat that was resting on his plate and rolled his eyes as Kirishima and Effy shared their love for hamima chicken, talking about how amazing it is and different ingredients to eat it with. As much as he hated to admit it, he didn't like his friend talking to so much with a girl. He could already see Kirishima getting married and leaving him behind—
He clicked his tongue and looked away, trying to rid himself of the stupid thoughts. Like most boys, he didn't drool over the girl; he disliked her instead. To him, she just seemed like a pretentious bitch who probably lied about everything. But she wasn't like those girls from 'Mean Girls,' where they were so fake and literal plastics. No, she was far from that, actually and the difference gap was like the distance between the North pole and South pole. As far as he knew, she never said anything mean and basically was the school's sweetheart. But the more he thought about it, the more the fact that they knew very little about her came into light. In fact, nobody had ever been to her house or met her parents.
Effy talked with Kirishima about how much she liked hamima chicken, when truly, she didn't like it as much as she told him she did. In actuality, her favorite food was somen noodles but she didn't want to tell them that. In fact, everything she told them was a total lie and lying to every single person she talked to was like a reflex now. Carefully crafted lies tumbled from her lips and were said in a specific way to make them believable and the listeners believed what they were told with a naive sense.
She glanced at Bakugou who was scowling at the surface of the table. She reckoned he probably knew she was lying or was capable of figuring everything out. So, what she did was direct the least number of her lies toward him in fear of him catching on. She knew how smart he was a truthfully, he amazed her. He may have come off rude and an untamed porcupine at first, but she had seen him secretly smile before and it usually knocked the wind out of her. You could say she loved him, in a way, yes. It wasn't the romantic type of love or the brotherly love or the love you have for your family; it was the love you feel when you see something so real and human that you want to witness it again and again. She didn't love him, but she loved him.
