THAT BALLERINA WHO WANTED TO RUN AWAY

________

EFFY SQUEEZED THE PACK OF CIGARETTES IN HER SMALL, FRAGILE HANDS. She had "borrowed" it from a nearby convenience store and the cheap yellow lighter was in her other hand. She shakily opened up the little box, deliberately ignoring the warning of illness on the front. Then she cautiously flicked on the flame of the yellow lighter.

She had heard somewhere that smoking kills and at the moment, she wanted to die. Her eight-year-old mind and body couldn't take in everything  that was happening at the place she formerly called home and she wanted to run away. She wanted to run far, far away. A small part of her hoped that Peter Pan would fly her to Neverland like she had heard in stories at her school. She put the cancer stick between her lips and got ready to light the lighter.

"Whoa, kid!" Her head snapped up, expecting to see an angry adult with a scary expression but instead saw the face of an amused teenager, carrying a blue duffle bag. The teenager jogged to her place in the old barren area between hers and Bakugou's house. Kaya furrowed her eyebrows in utter confusion as the girl sat beside her in the dirt. The stranger girl chuckled and picked the toxic stuff from Kaya's hands.

"You've got guts, kid." she said, taking a cig from the pack and taking out her own silver lighter.

"Why are you not shouting at me?"

The stranger girl's eyes widened in shock and she stared at little Kaya. "Do you want me to shout at you?"

Kaya shook her head, no. After a moment's silence, the stranger girl stuck out her hand towards the younger girl, "You can call me Effy." She then leaned closer to the girl, with her brown orbs twinkling, "And I'm a liar."

Despite Effy saying she was a liar, Kaya shook her hand and didn't question her. She didn't mind if the teenager was some stalker or kidnapper. She'd go with this stranger rather than go back home. Her eyes wander to Effy's duffle bag to see a small of a part of a tutu sticking out. Then in a small voice she questioned, "You do ballet?" Effy nodded and looked straight ahead.

"I love ballet." she puffed a ring of smoke after inhaling the toxic stuff, "In ballet, you forget everything even if it's for a while. In ballet, you're not bound by anything. Of course, there's gravity to hold us down, but we defy it. We can't fly, so we jump. Nice, isn't it? In ballet... in ballet you're free."

Kaya stayed quiet and looked down at her lap, tears brimming in her eyes. She wanted that. She wanted to be free. She wanted something to hold onto as an escape. Tears run down her pale cheeks as her hands balled up the dress she was wearing. Effy noticed this and looked up at the sky, her next words said in a low whisper. "So you've got a bad life too, huh?" she then turned to look at Kaya dead in the eye with a serious expression, one differing from the happy one she had.
