04 | narrow alleyways

“WHAT HAPPENS now?” Rome started the conversation while we're inside the van.

Pareho kaming nagkibit-balikat ni Coal. “We don't know, either,” I mumbled, shivering a bit due to the cold morning breeze.

“What do you mean? Hindi niyo alam kung saan pupunta? Wala man lang itinerary para sa trip natin papunta sa mga stars?” he asked again. Charcoal and I both nodded our heads in unison at his remark.

Tumahimik ang van, siguro'y nag-iisip na rin kung saan pupunta o kung ano'ng topic naman ang bubuksan.

“So . . .” Rome started, making us dart our attention onto him. “What do you think of me? After I said that I'm a . . .” He stopped talking and gulped. His eyes wavered a bit, obviously hesitating to utter the next word.

“Gay?” Charcoal continued while glancing at Rome through the rear view mirror. “Why did you stop talking? It's not like it's a taboo word or an insult. You should take it as a compliment, instead. Huwag kang mahihiyang sabihin ang salitang 'yan. Be proud of it. The society created this mentality of using gay or other words describing a homosexual an insult — something they think will remove the dignity of the person. However, I think sexuality does not define your worth nor your potential as a human," he emphasized, activating his philosopher spirit once more.

Mabilis akong tumango at sumang-ayon sa sinabi ni Coal. Rome looked like he needs some boost of confidence.

“Coal's right,” I agreed. “But actually, I thought you're not a gay at first. I mean, you talk and move like a man, so I had a hard time distinguishing your gender identity,” I commented.

“It's because I'm not effeminate. I'm a guy who likes a guy, nothing in between. That's why I want to lessen those people who keeps on stereotyping gays. Not all gays move like girls in an exaggerated way nor they sound dramatically high-pitched, and vice versa. I'm not disregarding effeminate gays, though. Gays, in general, should be respected whether they're effeminate or masculine,” Rome enunciated.
