Madeline POV
6 years oldThe first time I saw Harry was at a neighborhood block party my parents drug me to when I was just 6 years old. He had his arms crossed over his small chest, and he looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world, but here in Surf City, North Carolina.
He was new, and I knew that because I knew just about everyone in our little town and I for sure knew everyone who lived in our neighborhood. It was less than a hundred houses, and mostly everyone who was here had been in these houses since the day mama and daddy brought me home from the hospital.
I had three best friends, who were also boys, and they'd lived here their whole lives too.
Edge, Baker, and Reese Jr., but we called him RJ for short. Those boys and me had been stuck together like glue since the day our moms had decided to be friends. We all only lived a couple houses away from each other, and everyone in this town knew if you saw one of us, the other 3 weren't too far behind.
"Who's that?" I asked Edge, who had come to stand next to me the moment I had shown up to the party. Edge and me were probably the closest out of the other boys. He was my neighbor, and our moms worked together at the small school system we had here in town for the locals who lived here.
Edge turns and looks to where I'm staring, and shrugs his shoulders when he takes in the new boy as well. "I'm not sure. Mom said we had a new family in the neighborhood, guess that's him."
"Wonder what his name is." RJ says, walking up beside us and throwing his arm around me.
While edge and me were the closest, RJ was the most protective and kinda took on the role of all of our big brother. He was the oldest by 9 months, and was the tallest too.
"My mom said they're from somewhere up north and his dad is some big fancy Doctor. Betcha they talk funny," Baker says with a plate full of food in his hands. "Look at how he's dressed."
All the boys laugh, but not me. He is definitely dressed different than everyone else, but I kinda like it. He's wearing a black tshirt, black pants, and some small converses.
The boys around me are shirtless and in swimming trunks and either barefoot or wearing flip flops. When you spend your life living at the beach, your apparel over the summer pretty much stays the same, which is minimal clothing.
I don't know how he ain't burning up in all them clothes.
"Should we go talk to him?" I ask them, not wanting the kid to feel left out.
My mama would tan my hide if she ever found out I wasn't being a nice girl to everyone I meet. Her and my dad aren't strict by any means, but they have taught me about manners and kindness for as long as I can remember.
"He looks weird." RJ complains.
"Who shows up to a beach party wearing pants?" Baker agrees.
"Guys, shut up. How do we know he hasn't just moved here and he doesn't have beach clothes yet?" Edge says, and it's one of the many reasons I have a soft spot for him.
He's a lot like me, and he doesn't care who it is, he's always nice to them.
"Let's go." I tell my boys and leave no room for argument.
The four of us walk over together towards our hopeful new friend, with RJ of course in the lead. Baker stands next to him while me and Edge are in the back.
"Hey," RJ says as he approaches the new boy. "I'm RJ, this here is Baker, and the two behind me are Madden and Edge." RJ introduces all of us and calls me by my nickname, Madden.
