Madden's POV
21 years old

I ended up not staying past the weekend much to my parents and the boys disappointment. But I couldn't let what almost happened in Harry's room actually happen, so I had to put space between us. Or a whole opposite side of a country more like it.

But it seemed it didn't matter how far away I ran from him, I couldn't run from my thoughts. Which had always been solely based around him, to my dismay.

"Are you even listening to me?" West snapped suddenly.

I looked up from my plate of food and found him staring daggers at me across our booth. We were sitting in one of our favorite little diners enjoying breakfast together before he had to leave for a work trip.

"Of course I'm listening to you."

"What did I just say then?"

"I..you..you know. Work stuff, like always."

West drops his fork onto his plate loudly. "No, it wasn't work stuff. I was saying my parents wanted to know if we'd come to their house for your birthday this year."

"Why would they want me to come there for my own birthday?"

"My mother says she wants to throw you some kind of party."

"Your mother despises me." I tell him, which is true. His whole family wasn't the fondest of me because I didn't wipe my ass with 100 dollar bills.

"That's not true, and I've been telling all of them to treat you better because you are the one I've chosen." He says to placate me. "My family has just never met someone like you before so they don't know how to act."

"Which is just a really subtle way of saying they don't like me. It's fine, West. You don't have to lie about it." I shrug nonchalantly like it's no big deal, and really to me, it's not. West's family liking me has never been a huge concern of mine or something I cared about. That wasn't going to change now because they suddenly wanted to throw me a birthday party.

"What the hell is your problem?" He demands.

"What are you talking about?" I fill my mouth with a bite of egg and bacon.

"Ever since we went to Surf City for that birthday party, you haven't been the same. More specifically, since you stepped out of your ex boyfriends bedroom."

"I already told you, I was trying to find a pacifier for August." I lie, as I once again fill my mouth with a gulp of black coffee.

"So you say, but that doesn't explain where Harry was at the same time you were also gone."

I just shrug.

"You're never going to fully open up to me, are you?" West asks, and I actually feel a swell of guilt form in my chest at the look on his face.

"It's not that I'm not opening up to you, it's just that it's hard to talk about. Harry and me were something different, for a long time. And I don't know if you've ever been in love before, but it's sucks to keep having to rehash things over and over again when they're already said and done."

"And you're sure," He implores. "That you and Harry are really all said and done? No more feelings are there?"

"I'll always love Harry because it's not possible for me not to. He's been an important person in my life and was my first love. That kind of things doesn't just go away."

"Okay, let me say this better then." He folds his hand under his chin and looks at me intently. "Am I wasting my time here, Madeline? You have to know that I'm crazy about you. I just want to know it's the same for you before this goes any further."
