"When you were little," Dong-in said, "What did you want to be when you got older?"
The glow from the campfire licked at his features, accentuating his sharp jaw, tan skin and milky hazel eyes. The meat in his hand was half finished and even then, it was his second of the night. That hardly mattered, though. It was a feast and he was going to eat like it is.
They'd stopped for the night, resting in the risky open. After driving for a while, they were unable to find a safe space to camp in so they decoded to sleep under the night sky. They'd rub into a deer on their drive and had taken the opportunity to roast and eat the meat. It was considerably fleshy so everyone could go in for seconds and thirds.
It was a dark night. The sky and trees created the perfect enclosure from Hosts and all else that lurked the street. However, even then they couldn't go ahead to grasp sound sleep and so they appointed watch outs for every three or so hours. At this moment, they were all awake and chatting in hushed tones - just enjoying the feel of the breeze on their skins and the mirage of freedom.
Sonya smiled softly a him. "It's really embarrassing." She said. "Don't laugh but I wanted to be a princess,"
Dong-in's brows shot up in surprise, "A princess." He hummed.
Sonya scratched the top of her head sheepishly, "I blame all the Barbie movies,"
"Hm," he smiled. "Guess that dream's come true,"
Sonya looked confused for a good minute before a smile and blush spread across her face simultaneously. She shoved his chest. "You're so cheesy,"
Dong-in reached over to tuck her hair behind her ears. "Only for you,"
Jimin, Taehyung, Jungkook and Cha Won were speaking about something no one else was interested in but they seemed to be really into their talk as Cha Won suddenly let out a loud guffaw, shocking everyone around him due to two factors: It was the first time he'd laughed or even shown emotion in two days and for another, the sound was so loud, everyone froze and listened for gnashing of teeth or shuffling of feet. Once they were sure no Hosts were coming, they all melted back into the activities they previously indulged in, with Cha Won letting out a sheepish apology.
No one could really blame the younger boy. It was easy to slip into normalcy even with everything in the world being no where near it. The silence would take some getting used to and so would the violence. Besides, the boy who was the youngest of them all, deserved a good laugh due to everything that he had seen. They were glad to see him regressing to his old self bit by bit without feeling guilty for it. Emotionless Cha Won was a bit of a turmoil.
"Yeah but Space Zombie 3 is way better than Infinity Battle," Jungkook had been attempted to convince his three friends of this fact but none of them seemed to be buying it.
"As if! Space Zombie is so overrated. Poor graphics, easy gameplay, you could give that to a four year old and even they would hate it!" Jimin was the strongest defender of his favourite game Infinity Battle. He just could not understand how Jungkook could like anything other than that.
"It's true. No offense but Space Zombie is trash," Taehyung shrugged innocently as if he had not just destroyed Jungkook's entire life.
"I. . .I can't believe I'm friends with such ignorant buffoons!" Jungkook exclaimed, shaking his head as if the worst atrocity had just been committed.
"It's not ignorance if it's the truth!" Cha Won countered, a cute giggle escaping his lips. It was fun to see Jungkook get so riled up about something as meaningless as a game, in his opinion. He didn't really play, anyway; preferred books and movies.
Jungkook clutched at his heart dramatically. "Top ten anime betrayals,"
Meanwhile, Namjoon and Seokjin sat huddled in their corner, whispering and giggling about nothing in particular. They were the closest to the campfire because Seokjin got cold the easiest. They were more or less smuggled into each other and as much as they'd have liked to think that the red encased on their cheeks was from the burning fire, they knew each other's presence was the only ingredient needed to stir such a reaction.
"The stars are beautiful tonight," Namjoon spoke, voice rumbling against the back of Seokjin's head as they spooned. "It's been a while since I had time to appreciate them,"
Seokjin cocked his head to the side slightly and stared at the stars also. "You don't need to be outside to appreciate the stars, silly!"
"I don't understand." Namjoon states plainly.
"You can appreciate the stars anywhere, anytime!" Seokjin shook his head. "Just think of them, remember their twinkles, recall that even though most of them are dead, their light still spreads throughout the galaxy, decorating our sky with fairy lights, like little fireflies. You don't need the covering of night to think about the stars. The stars are always there, morning or night, they just need a little darkness to shine, doesn't mean they're gone though,"
Namjoon inhaled sharply. Seokjin's words were beautiful but Namjoon felt as if the older boy was trying to convey a message. A message he didn't like all too well.
"Seokjin," he pulled the boy closer to his chest.
With a content sigh, Seokjin tilted his head to look in Namjoon's eyes.
"You won't leave me, right?"
Seokjin smiled, a burst of confidence spreading through him as he brought his fingers up to gently caress Namjoon's cheeks. "I can't promise forever, I don't even know if I'll be here tomorrow. But if I'm ever gone, think of me as a star. I'll always be with you, Joonie,"
"I don't want you to leave," Namjoon leaned into his touch, "Don't go,"
Smile still on his face, Seokjin leaned up, contemplating his choices. It was like a trust fall, you close your eyes and fall back and hope that the next person would catch you. It was very risky, but it cemented the trust. He brought his lips to Namjoon's, and pressed against it softly, heart beating erratically in his chest.
Under the moonlight and starshine, covered in the glow of the campfire, Namjoon and Seokjin kissed, their friends only a feet feet away and it was the best thing ever. They kissed and forgot about everything else. They kissed until they memorised each other's lips, each other's taste.
It was a trust fall, and Namjoon caught him.
Away from the romantics scene only a few feet across, Hoseok and Yoongi, too, were immersed in their own world. A world only the two of them could create. Hoseok had his hand pressed under his armpit, arm continuously going up and down as he played a tune and you would think Yoongi would be absolutely disgusted by this prospect, but Min Yoongi was the fondest when it came to his little sunshine boyfriend.
"Play the Michael Jackson one!" Yoongi clapped lightly, egging his boyfriend on with a smile on his face.
Hoseok giggled and continued playing armpit music in the form of Michael's Jackson's Triller while Yoongi looked at him with the softest of smiles, rocking a very much entertained Kim Fei in his arms.
"He's good, isn't he?" He asked the teenager who nodded vigorously, just glad to be surrounded by such warm people. Glad to he alive.
And so it went into the night. On one end, Dong-in and Sonya casually flirted with one another, on another, Jungkook, Jimin, Taehyung and Cha Won argued about superior games. Namjoon and Seokjin snuck a couple more kisses during the time and Hoseok entertained both his boyfriend and the little Fei. It was a very blissful night, one to forever be remembered.
For with all else to come, they would need this memory normalcy to keep them going. They say ignorance is bliss but there is a fine line between bliss and perdition.
They would soon be walking that line.
