"Happy birthday to you!" The large group concluded the song, urging Fei to blow out her candle.
"And many more, on channel four!" Seokjin piped up, withering and shrivelling up in the laughter Namjoon had come to love.
"Shut up, Jin! You're not funny!" Hoseok hollered, plunging the large group into laughter.
They'd all gathered in the common room to celebrate Fei's birthday. She'd grown to be lovable around everyone in Building 63 and so they missed no opportunity in helping set up everything for the girl's party with spare things they could find.
The black haired girl showed her full teeth as she blew out the single candle, clapping her hands along with everyone when she was done.
"Thanks, you guys!" She smiled causing a series of cheers before the party went on.
"Happy sixteenth, little sister," Namjoon hovered over her with a smile. "Sorry we couldn't get you a real cake,"
Fei looked at the platter which consisted of different dishes but mainly a plate full of meat where her candle previously stood. She smiled at her brother.
"Please, meat over cake any day!" She laughed.
"Happy birthday, Fei!" Jungkook laughed. "You're older now,"
"Yeah, and so are you. Only difference is I'm pulling it off," she winked at the twenty one year old boy.
"Sonya! Fei's been hanging out too much with Yoongi-hyung again!" The boy reported with a fond smile, popping piece of meat in his mouth.
"Now now, Fei, what did I tell you about that?" Sonya stalked towards the girl, shaking her head in disappointment. "Never hang out with him without me. I wanna be savage too!"
Fei laughed loudly and jumped into her 'Older Sister's (as she had dubbed her) arms. They'd managed to get a lot more closer over the course of a few years to the pont where they were both inseparable.
Sonya rubbed her waist length hair. "Happy birthday," she said. "Your hair's getting long. We'll need to cut it,"
"No!" Fei pouted. "I like it this way!"
Whilst the two females argued about hair and whatnot, the rest hosted meaningless conversation throughout the remainder of the party. Actually, the whole party had been building up to something; something that both terrified and enticed them.
For the first time in three years, they were going to open the gate and step outside. They'd been keeping track of all that happened, the government updating them every few months. Surprisingly, the signal in Building 63 had never gone down ( perhaps that was the means by which Wu Taeil contacted them — they'd met him. He was a nice guy) and so they were always kept up to date with the happenings of the world outside the walls.
After a few hours, when the party had died out, Doctor Prabhjot gathered everyone once again and declared with a loud voice, "It's time,"
Excited and terrified, the hundreds of refugees followed her to the gate, wondering just what awaited them behind the large metal contraption. Doctor Prabhjot stood in front of the gate and heaved a shuddering breath, her fear relayed in one exhale. And then she tapped something on the device she held.
The gate clanked and for a while, looked like it would never open up. It seemed maybe they'd left it shut for so long, it forgot how to open. Thankfully, after a long tense minute, it slowly rolled open emitting the sound a robots arm would make in movies when moved.
Breaths caught in throats as it slowly pulled open to reveal their destiny. What would become of them? Was the government lying? Was it really beyond the gate? Would they relive another nightmare?
Finally, the gate pulled open completely and suddenly, they all gasped.
Yoongi stared outside in shock, his hung jaw preaching his thoughts he'd usually kept so well hidden.
It was. . .beautiful.
How the government had managed to rebuild Seoul or what was left of it under three years was really an amazement. Because what they saw was a genuine sharp contrast to what they'd run from. They thought Seoul was beautiful before but now, it was simply magnificent.
Fei and her friend Koi were the first to jump outside, exclamations of happiness hot on their tongues. The sky was blue again. Whatever was forever burning was gone.
"Woo!" Fei screamed into the sky, scaring a group of birds. "This is amazing!"
At that, everyone broke out of the spell of shock and equally began running around and exploring they knew the government wasn't done rebuilding but it was enough that they could actually lead normal lives again. They could get jobs and settle down or just do whatever the hell they wanted and although it was what saved them, they could leave Building 63.
Hoseok pulled Yoongi in for a kiss so suddenly, their teeth clashed. But it was alright, neither of them minded, anyway. Namjoon held his boyfriend and looked on at everyone with a smile while Seokjin Nuzzled his head in his chest.
"Come on!" Taehyung shouted, hurriedly dragging his three best friends to a beautiful sight he saw in the distance.
Jimin, Jungkook and Cha Won stumbled behind him. "Slow down, Tae!"
"It really is beautiful," Doctor Prabhjot whispered as she and Sonya walked together, examining the tarred roads and refurbished building.
"The idea that something this beautiful could come out of a tragedy, makes me grateful. . ." Sonya smiled wistfully, looking at the sky overhead. The boyish grin of Dong-in flashed through her mind and she smiled wider and the thought of him being in peace.
The blue tinged sky signified new dawns, new beginnings.
"Best birthday ever!" Fei cried out. Even with everything, she had never lost that child-like wonder about her. It made Sonya's heart clench with joy.
Together, the group walked and explored what had brought them pain before. All ten of them, the tightknit family stood and watched the sky get brighter and brighter with each firework that was shot into it.
Everything would no doubt be different; no parents, no guidance, no familiarity. They'd lost everything when the world went to shit, but they'd also gained and learned. They were older and wiser but more importantly, they had each other. They could do anything.
The last firework shot into the sky and they all smiled, eyes trained up. They should've been dead by now, if it were three years ago but it was not.
Suddenly, a voice crackled from a megaphone a few feet away. They looked to find the culprit looking around with a smile on his face.
"This is Wu Taeil from Musen 11FM. I repeat, this is Wu Taeil from Musen 11FM," Taeil smiled and spoke the next words with calculated joy. ". . .you're free,"
