I hate my name. It's so long and awkward. Who gives their child four names? Well, too answer that, my parents. My name is Ethel Rose Lilibeth Piper. Long? I know right.
I live in Amity. My faction believes that kindness is the most important factor in life. And that violence is why there where so many problems in the world. I agree. I wake early this morning and drag myself out of bed. I put on my favorite red frilled skirt and an orange teeshirt. These colors represent our fun, friendly way of living. Everyone in our faction wears them. I brush my wavy, brown, long hair and braid it before going downstairs. I am greeted by my brother, Logan, giving me a hug.
"Good morning Ethie" he says into my ear.
Nobody calls me Ethie except him, sometimes I wish more people would call me that.
"Morning" I reply cheerfully.
"Someone's feeling better this morning!"
My mother exclaims as she briskly walks from the kitchen to hug me.
"I am actually" I say as she embraces me. I don't hug her back, instead I stand there awkwardly waiting for her to let go.
Yesterday I had a bad day. My father wasn't doing his usual jobs at the town office building. He work as a sort of faction leader I guess.
He hates me. It sounds unusual for a father to hate their daughter but he does. He didn't want us. When mum fell pregnant he left the house, especially because she was having twins. Did I forget to mention Logan and I are twins?.
Dad doesn't belong here. In this faction. He's not kind. I don't know why he's here but he is.
Today is the day of the aptitude tests, these are a personality test for sixteen year olds that tells us what faction we belong in. Tomorrow is the choosing ceremony, all of the sixteen year olds choose their faction. I don't want to change. I agree with all of the beliefs that amity represents. The five factions are, 1. Abnegation, the selfless 2. Erudite, the intelligent 3. Candor, the truthful 4. Dauntless, the brave and 5. Amity, the peaceful. To me I feel as if I fit into Amity the best, but with my father, I am forcing myself to leave.
I decide not to eat breakfast before the test for I fear that I will vomit it up. Instead I just brush my teeth, slip on my brown sandals and make my way out the door to the bus stop.
I've always wanted to travel by train. It looks so exciting and exhilarating! But, only the dauntless are allowed to ride it. I sit there lost in a day dream for what felled like a minute but all of a sudden I see Logan's face in front of mine and he is shaking my shoulders.
"Ethie!" He shouts "Ethie snap out if it come on we'll be late!"
"Sorry" I mutter quietly still slightly dazed.
"It's okay" Logan says looking relieved. "You can't help it only dad is to blame"
"Are you nervous" I say excitedly, my bubbly nature returning back.
"A little." He says quietly.
"Me too"
The bus arrives and we hop on. Two abnegation boys stand up from there seat to let us sit down.
"Thank you for you consideration" I say with a smile. I used to find I uncomfortable when abnegation member would give up their seat for me. I would feel guilty. I'm over it now I understand that it is their choice and they are happy to give up their spot.
I stare out the window until we arrive at the school. It's big, grey and ugly but I'm used to it and I like learning. I never would admit to it because to desire intelligence is Erudite, not Amity. I zone out I little while we walk towards the cafeteria where we wait for our turns. I sit on the carpet and look over to the abnegation, they look so boring, just sitting there, all wearing grey, all looking the same, none speaking. To me it seems dull. Their life has good purpose though, I agree that helping others is an excellent thing but I wouldn't go all the way to serving them.
I next look over to the Candor, they all wear black and white and are in small groups taking. I don't think I could ever have a proper conversation with someone whilst knowing they know all of my secrets.
Before I get to continue looking at the other faction a tap on my shoulder brings me out of my daze.
"Hello, my name is Caitlyn" a girl who is slightly taller that me with short, vibrant, red hair says with a friendly smile on her face.
"Ethel Rose, nice to meet you" I reply
"Me and my friends were wondering if you would like to join us playing a game?" She offers politely.
"Okay that sounds fun!" I say excitedly hoping to get my mind off the tests.
We sit in a circle and play a traditional game that has been around in our faction for centuries, it involves one person sitting in the middle and clapping hands with each other.
I forget all about the tests losing myself in the game and laughing along with these people. That's a good thing about our faction, it doesn't matter who you are, or what you look like everyone accepts each other and we are all friends even if we don't know one another. I am not completely trusting however, because I know from experience that the way people act in public is not always how they act in private. I can see right through Caitlyn's stupid phony facade, she is obviously stressed out but she puts on an overly fake smile and continues acting like nothing bothers her. This is one thing that bugs me in our faction, your never allowed to be in a bad mood, or allowed to show your disapproval or irritation.
A few of these people, including Caitlyn, get called to be tested. Some come back pale faced with sweaty foreheads but some look relived and happy.
I decide to leave this game and join another group. I approach three girls who have just finished singing a song.
"Would you mind if I joined in?" I ask.
"Not at all! I'm Jamie and this is Daisy and Phoebe." Says a girl with long blonde hair.
"Ethel Rose" I reply shaking each of their hands.
We start to song a lullaby that everyone knows because I don't know many songs.
"Train whistle blowing, makes a sleepy noise,
Underneath the blankets go all the girls and boys.
Rocking, rolling, riding, out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away.
Driver's at the engine, Breakman rings the bell,
Sandman swings the lantern to show that all is well.
Rocking, rolling, riding, out along the bay,
All bound for Morningtown, many miles away."
As I finish singing I wonder where that song originated from. My thought are broken by Phoebe.
"You are a beautiful singer!" She exclaimed.
I blushed "Thank you so are you"
She was about to reply when a woman from one if the rooms calls my name.
"Ethel Rose Piper" she calls.
I say goodbye to the girls and make my way to the glass room.
