Ethie's Story -A Divergent Fanfic

Chapter 7

"Who's gonna go first?" The woman says with a sly smile.

"I say we let them decide. " Max says.

We all look at each other.

"Why don't we let the one of transfers go first? Prove that they deserve there place among us. " one of the Dauntless girls says. She looks at me daringly. I start to feel sick. I feel that lump in your throat that rises when your about to throw up. I am not so good with heights. I never really liked being up high but I guess I'll have to deal with it. I clench my fists and grit my teeth.

"I'll go first." I say.

People start agreeing and talking over each other, me and Logan are shoved towards the front.

"Go on you crazy lunatic. Jump!" One of them says. I recognize her from school. Jenna her name is.

"You'll be okay Ethie. " Logan whispers behind me.

I have to do this or they'll tease me more. I need to prove I belong. Without thinking I run up and leap off the edge.

I feel as if I'm floating down rather than falling. The adrenalin is pumping through me and I am really scared. I feel so alive. Suddenly I hit the ground. I feel rope and realize its a net.

"Our first jumper!" Someone says but my eyes are still adjusting to the darkness.

"Over here!" They yell.

I walk to where the voice is coming from and he helps me off the net.

"What's your name?" He asks.

"Ethel. " I say.

"Unusual name, I'm Four. " he replies shaking my hand.

"What? Like the number?" I ask.

He nods. "First jumper, Ethel He yells out.

I hear a scream and then here someone land.

"Ow. " a guys voice says.

"Logan?" I ask.

"Ethel?" He says. "We're alive!" He says stupidly while he is assisted of the net.

"Well duh! They're not going to kill us before initiation. " I say.

I few Dauntless initiates come down, then I hear a squeal and see that Nora has come down.

"Woah!" She exclaims under her breath. "That was cool. " she laughs. Logan laughs aswell.

We wait as other initiates fall into the net.

"Whoo!!" Someone whoops with excitement. Seconds later as figure falls into the net. He come over and stand next to us.

"I want to do that again!" He says and I realize its Finn. I laugh at his crazy remark.

After everyone has landed we are escorted away from the bet and separated into two groups, Dauntless initiates and transfers.

A man who introduced himself earlier as Eric, the Dauntless leader, takes the Dauntless initiates to their room while we're taken for a tour. First, Four takes us to a place known as 'the pit'.

The pit is amazing! It's like a massive cavern, the walls are lined with carved stores for anything you would ever need! I stand in awe.

Four then takes us to a place called the chasm. It's its a body of water kind of like a river, one side is calm and tranquil whereas the other is choppy and rough.

"The chasm remixes is that there is a line between bravery and idiocy!" Four shouts over the sound of the waves. "One daredevil jump and you will die. It has happened before, and it will happen again,you have been warned. " Four finishes.

We are shown to our doom which is simple with set of bunk beds lining the walls. I choose my bunk underneath Logan's, next to the wall. I have Nora and the Erudite girl with glasses from earlier I the bunk next to me and Finn and some other boy across from me.

The end of the bed has a wooden box attached, for clothes, but I realize I don't have any.

We are given the rest of the day to ourselves. I walk with Logan to ward the pit not really sure what to do.

"Do you guys wanna have lunch with us?" Nora asks. As she approaches us from behind with Finn.

"Sure. " Logan and I say in unison.

We walk over to the canteen and get our food. I don't know what to get so Nora hands my some sort of sandwich wrapped in paper. Logan and Finn take one two. I take a bottle of water and so does Nora, then she grabs a red plastic bottle and we find a table.

"What is this?" I ask her as I unwrap the paper.

"You've never had a hand burger before?" Finn asks in disbelief.

I shake my head. When I look at it it is a circular sandwich with cheese and a brown circle in it.

"Is that meat?" Logan asks disgusted.

"Yeah. " Nora replies with a mouthful of food.

"First time for everything. " I say as I hesitantly bite into it. The flavor is unlike anything I've ever tasted before but I can't fully enjoy it knowing a cow died for this.

"Your goon to eat it?" Logan asks in shock.

"Not eating it isn't going to bring it back from the dead Logan. " I say.

Finn laughs at my remark. "Here put this on it. " he says handing me the red bottle.

"Thanks. " I say and squeeze it onto my burger. It tastes like sugary salt if that makes sense. Kinda like tomatoes.

"What made you choose Dauntless?" I ask Nora casually trying to start up a conversation.

"Candor wasn't for me. I don't like telling everybody everything. Some secrets are better off kept and I lie to easily to be a Candor. " she answers.

"Yeah same here," Finn says. "Not everyone should know everything about you, everyone has things they prefer to keep private and the Daunteless just seem so fearless and carefree that I felt like I belonged here. "

"How about you Logan?" Nora asks.

"Excuse me, would you mind if I sit with you guys?" Asks an Erudite girl, she is quite pretty with light brown, short hair, pale blue eyes and thick framed glasses.

"Sure. " I say and she sits down.

"I'm Luna. " she says.

"Cool name. " Logan acknowledges.

"Thankyou. " she replies. And then blushes.
