"Wake up sleepy!" I hear someone screech in my ear. I open my eyes but Nora keeps shaking my shoulders.
"I'm up! I'm up!" I say.
I get up and take a quick shower and change into some tight denim pants and a black teeshirt. I brush my hair and leave it out. I love the feeling I get when I see myself and know that I am Dauntless, but, this time there's a small feeling in my stomach that I don't belong here. I ignore if and walk out.
I walk with Luna to the training room we initiation will begin. I must pass this. To me, being faction less is worse than death. I cannot fail. Being alone and starving and unclean is a horrible fate.
I stand amongst the other initiates. A girl with tanned skin and short brown hair turns to me.
"Oh look," she says with a fake smile. The boy next to her with dark hair turns to look at us. "It's Luna and the Lunatic." She says and the both burst out laughing.
I look down not knowing what to do. I clench my fists. The voices start. Not the voices, not now.
"So does anyone know what we're doing today?" Logan asks and I return to normal.
"Not a single clue. " I say.
"Hey. " Nora says as she joins us.
I zone out but I am aware that Four is telling us what we will be doing. I hear dads voice in my wars, yelling at me.
"Ethie!" Logan whisper yells. I look for him but I only see black and I realize that I have my hand over my wars and my eyes squeezed shut. "Come one we are learning to shoot a gun. "
Four hands me a gun and I stand with my feet shoulder length apart. I look next to me and the boy that laughed at me is there. He gives me a smug look, Logan, who is next to me, tells me that his name is Peter. I hold the gun with two hands away from my body. I squeeze the cold metal trigger and it jolts my back and it takes me a while to regain balance. My bullet didn't even make the target.
I fire a few more but still don't hit the target at all.
"You should've stayed at home with your mommy and daddy, maybe they could've fired the gun for you. " He says teasingly and laughs.
This makes the voice in my head start. I he's my father yelling. I feel his palm meet my cheek.
I can ignore this. I can ignore this.
"You don't belong here, Dauntless doesn't take in loonies. " he says.
"Calling people names is an act of cowardice. I say taking a step closer. My voice sounds a lot more confident than I feel but I try to hide it.
"You calling me a coward?" He asks stepping closer.
"No, because I don't call people names. " I say getting so close I could smell his breath if I was taller.
"Go home psycho. " he says. I see that a few people have stopped and are watching.
"Nice, pick on the smallest girl in the room." I say "oh how brave!" I say with enthusiasm.
" I wouldn't tease a guy with a gun in his hands if I were you. " he says holding the gun up.
"Shoot me." I taunt. "I dare you. "
"You don't think I could? You don't think I'm brave enough?" He says holding it to my temple. I don't even flinch.
"You chose a small innocent girl who can't shoot straight and started calling her names. No I don't think your brave at all. " I say. "Shoot me. " I say.
"Alright that's enough. " Four says and steps between us. I turn around and go back to shooting.
I breath out. I squeeze the trigger and close my eyes.
When I look up I find that my bullet hit the target, quite close to the middle too.
"Nice job Ethie!" Logan says. I see he has hit the target a few times but not as close as mine. I give him a small smile. It's the best I can do right now.
"Hey are you okay?" He asks.
"Fine. " I lie. I see why I'm not fit for Candor.
