My eyes widened with fear and I staggered backwards in shock. "I haven't seen you since your parents' execution, " he said, giving me a wicked smile. "No," I said, my voice shaking. "Well, who is this?" the man asked. "Uh, ah, um," I mumbled brilliantly.
"I'm Lukas," Lukas said firmly.
"Well, I'd love to stay and chat for a while, but Sammi and I have some unfinished buisness we need to do," the man said, grabbing my wrist. "No!" I screamed. "I'm not going anywhere with you!" Lukas stepped closer to the man and said, "Leave her alone." in a tone several octaves lower than his usual voice.
I broke free from the man's grasp and ran. I ran as fast and as hard as I could. I turned and looked behind me to see Lukas sprinting behind me.
"In the cave!" I yelled and we dove into the darkness, scratching up our arms and legs.
Lukas and I sat next to each other in complete darkness, our chests heaving.
"Who was that?" Lukas asked after we caught our breaths. "Elemental hunter," I said and sighed. Lukas shook his head and looked me in the eye. "Let's go back," he said. I nodded and stood. We both walked out cautiously and eventually picked up a quicker pace.
"I'm sorry about your parents, " Lukas said softly. I inhaled sharply, my breath catching in my throat. I shook my head, pushing away the thought. "Sorry, bad topic?" he asked. "No," I said and kept walking. "I just don't really want to talk about it. It alreadyhappened, I can't change it," I continued. "Besides, I've got the best friends I could ever have," I said, offering a small smile, trying to make the conversation have a lighter feel.
"So, do you think the others are about to send out a search party?" Lukas asked, laughing. "Probably, " I said, grinning.
We walked back to grounds in a comforting silence, enjoying each others' company.
"There you guys are!" Bleu exclaimed. "Lukas, Sammi!" Cory said, his face losing the worried expression it wore not even a minute ago. "Great. You guys are back. Now help me saddle the horses," Kira said, motioning for me to follow her.
Bleu, Cory, Lukas and I grinned at each other. Kira had an interesting way of greeting people.
I follwed her to the horses and began saddling my own horse, Horizon. Her palomino coat was pretty clean, considering we have been out here for two days. I laid my khaki colored saddle bag over her wide hind quarters, followed by a light weight burgendy blanket. I bridled her and tied her reins to a tree branch. Next, I haltered Cory's horse, Falcon, and began to tack him up. Falcon was a gorgeous black Thouroghbred who was extremely friendly. Kira already had Chesney, Breezy, and Romeo ready and waiting for their riders. Kira mounted Chesney and Bleu mounted Romeo, a strawberry roan gelding. Lukas and Cory finished packing up the tents, then mounted their horses. Wordlessly, we trotted our horses out of the woods and onto a worn dirt path.
"To Kenya!" Kira called out.
