"How much longer?" Bleu whined. "Shut up and appreciate that we aren't dead," Kira snapped and rolled her eyes. Bleu shrunk back in her saddle and sighed.
"So, how are you?" Lukas asked me. I turned to face him and said, "As good as you can get when you're being chased by people trying to kill you, I guess." Lukas laughed, flashing his gorgeous smile. I felt my cheeks get hot, but immediately ignored it. No. I told myself. You can't start this. You'll ruin the mission. I shrugged away the thought and smiled back.
"You okay?" Lukas asked. "Yeah. Fine. I'm good," I said. Really? THAT'S how an 'okay' person acts?! I yelled at myself. "You sure?" he chuckled.
I nodded, blushing. Stop!! I yelled at myself. The problem was, I couldn't hide my feelings. "Okay...," he said and laughed. He turned towards Cory and the two began talking.
"Dang it," I mumbled and rubbed my forehead in frustration.
"We're here!" Kira announced. I stopped Horizon and dismounted. We led our horses into the gated community. "Give your horses to Sarabi, he and his men will untack them and cool them down," Kira said, motioning to a tall African man. I cautiously handed him Horizon's reins. "C'mon. He's not gonna hurt your precious horse," Kira scoffed, rolling her honey brown eyes. I crossed my arms when Horizon was led away.
"Cory and Sammi, go get food. Lukas, Bleu, and I will head to my mom's house," Kira said. "Let's go," I said to Cory. He nodded and followed me into the covered market. "Produce first?" Cory asked. "Sure," I said and pointed to a booth. A sign in front of the booth read: FRESH VEGGIES. I grabbed a woven basket and filled it with red tomatoes, fresh carrots, and bright yellow squash. I paid the men with five coins and he smiled at me. Cory was already putting eggplant, cauliflower, and green beans in his basket. I moved onto the next booth, filling the rest of my basket with fruit. Cory and I both had full baskets. "Bread?" I asked. Cory nodded and followed me to the bakery and we picked out two loaves of bread.
"Let's go see Kira," I said. With that, Cory and I walked out of the market.
