Jaylee's POV
My insides felt like they were twisting in multiple different knots as my spine started to grow cold from the chilling wind. The atmosphere around us was quite still and silent, almost as if everything had been abandoned. There was no sign of human presence in this dark dim lit town, but we managed to walk by every empty building safely.
The guys kept their guns positioned before them as we had spread out yet stayed closed in reach. Louis was leading the way in the front while Zayn and I stayed in the middle. The others chose to stay on the left and right side of us, shielding us from the open. My heart was pumping roughly against my rib cadge, but there wasn't much I could do to calm it.
Everything about this situation made my skin turn pale. I had a sharp dagger in my hand since Louis told me it would be best if I had my defense weapon ready. Since knife throwing was my top skill, I decided I would stick with that rather than shoot a gun. Even though the last thing I wanted to do was harm someone, I've never held onto a knife so tightly before.
Louis then slowed down as his eyes narrowed at a building that was coated with heavy fog. He examined it for a while before he glanced left to right. His head then turned towards us as he looked at everyone before speaking. "We'll check out this place, see what's there. Take cover, don't expect it to be a no man's land."
We then all ran quietly towards the house before Louis grabbed the door and opened it for us, waiting by it as we all went inside. He quickly came in as well before closing the door and locking it.
"Jaylee and Zayn stay here while we check the building, make sure it's clear." Louis said before him, Niall, Harry, and Liam all went separate ways and hunched down while searching the place.
Zayn looked around as I did too, holding my breath in order to not make any sounds. I noticed this place was a two story house just like the other one we went in. It looked like someone had previously lived here but left it in a hurry. Although it was too dark to see much, I could at least see the shadows of the furniture.
The guys then came back to where Zayn and I were before they all looked at each other.
"Clear."
"We're clear"
"It's clear upstairs."
"No sign of anyone."
I then exhaled deeply, feeling slightly better as Zayn nodded his head and released my hand. "Good. We'll be safe in here for a bit, it'll give us time to pack up and get some water and food in us." Zayn said as he left my side and walked towards the kitchen.
"Would this be a bad time to say I actually miss being at your house rather than being here?" I spoke up as the guys stared at me.
"We all feel that way. But this needs to be done." Louis said before he put his gun on the counter.
"So.... if we win this... tournament thing... and all the other gangs are dead, you guys will be the kings of the state? Or....?" I was trying to understand the meaning of this better than what I was told.
"We will rule the whole State. Everyone will know our names and will fear us. It's like being a president but slightly less effective. It's our dream to have it so that we can finally get some rest since no one will be able to overrule us. Everyone will fear us so bad that they'll stay away." Louis explained as I slowly nodded my head.
"What about the people who sent you the letter? Are they a part of it too?" I asked as Louis began counting his bullets.
"Yeah. They're very powerful as well. And smart. I'm sure they're still alive somewhere." Liam answered.
