A/N: Hey guys, this next chapter happened to me when I was making the previous. I find this strange because it never happened to me before when I wrote the hundreds and hundreds of chapters I've written and I have no explanation for it except to see it as a disturbance on the force of the universe. I hope you enjoy it, though.
It was late at night- almost midnight- and Daphne was typing out yet another story. It was a brand new story that she had been meaning to write out for weeks.
'Time to put all of those ideas into good use,' Daphne thought as she cracked her knuckles.
She started typing out the story into her tablet. She put in all the ideas she had into making this story. A horror story based on real life.
She was done and her finger hovered over the publish icon. But for some reason, she stopped herself.
'No no wait,' Daphne thought, taking her finger away. 'This book doesn't even have a cover yet.'
So she clicked on the back icon and saved the draft she just made. She minimised the app and went to her browser to look for a suitable picture to use as a cover for her new book.
She found one, a scary looking tree that just screams horror. She took a screenshot and returned to Wattpad where she would upload that picture as the cover of her new book.
She uploaded it, edited the tittle of the book a little, and added tags so that it would be easier for readers to find the book.
After that, she returned to her saved chapter and started editing out the errors as best as she could. And when she was done, she was pleased with the end result.
'Time to publish,' Daphne thought, adding a name to the chapter and a photo to match. 'Okay, here we go. Three... two... one...'
Daphne's finger went up to the publish icon again and this time, she clicked it. Her first ever horror story was going to be published for real.
The app asked her to make one last agreement for her book and she did. It processed her book and she was soon back at her Home Screen. The usual story has been successfully updated message didn't appear. She just thought it may have been a glitch and opened her drafts and written works page.
But to her surprise, the chapter she just typed out wasn't there! It was gone! The book itself was gone! It was as if it had disappeared into thin air!
Frantically, Daphne searched her unpublished drafts, one by one, hoping that it might've been saved as something else or merged with another one of her drafts.
But no. All she found were the old drafts she made. The book was missing.
Daphne tried restarting the app. It didn't work. She tried restarting her tablet, but... it didn't work either.
She tried searching for it on her phone, but that didn't work either.
"How could this be?!" Daphne questioned aloud. "How?! This has never happened before, why only now? When I'm writing a horror story?!"
Her mother came in and Daphne told her about what had happened. Her mother was just as confused as she was and thought maybe her work was indeed published, just that she had lost access to it.
"What is the name of the book?" She asked, taking out her phone.
"The Dusk of Nightfall," Daphne replied.
Her mother searched for the book on her phone, but she couldn't find it. She searched again, but it all led to a dead end.
"Something's up," her mother said, a little worried. "Did you save it?"
"Yes!" Daphne answered. "I did save the draft I made before publishing!"
"Then how?" Her mother asked, confused.
"I dunno," Daphne said desperately. "Nothing like this has happened before."
Daphne's mother saw the time. It was midnight. And Daphne was planning to upload a ghost story.
"Daphne, let's get to bed," her mother said firmly. "See the time? It's twelve o' clock already."
"But... but the story?" Daphne said, still panicked.
"Leave it," her mother said. "Look at the time. I think it's a disturbance in the force of the universe."
Daphne's eyes grew wide. Her statement didn't make sense, but it certainly did. This has never happened before, but why only when she's uploading her first ever horror story?
Reluctantly, Daphne followed what she had said and went to bed. She still kept mulling over the incident that just happened.
The next morning, Daphne sat at her desk and decided to try and restore the chapter herself. As in, sit down and retype all of the 1500+ words from the lost chapter.
She typed out a few lines, but the chapter just wouldn't come back the same way it did the night before. A writer would never be able to rewrite their work to be exactly the same as something they have already written without referring. Never in a million years no matter how hard they tried.
'I can't...' Daphne thought as she laid her head on the desk, on the verge of crying. 'I need to find a way to restore this.'
She decided to contact Wattpad to see if they would be able to restore it. They asked her a few questions, and she answered them as best as she could.
Not long after, she received a message saying the chapter has been found in the server and was fully restored. Daphne could've jumped in joy! That is, if she wasn't laying in bed...
She jumped off her bed ran to her tablet to check it out. The chapter was restored, just as if she had left it.
Daphne made a few more edits and published the chapter for real. It was early in the morning and Daphne had no issues publishing the chapter this time.
The book was published and she was happy about it. She sent it to her friends and decided to type out a new chapter for it, also based on a true story.
She wrote out a chapter about what had happened in the making of the previous chapter, in her horror story book. After all, how else could it be explained?
As far as she knew, a saved draft would never disappear even if you log into another device. As long as the chapter was saved, it would be safe. But how could she explain about what had happened to her?
Daphne was just happy that her chapter was successfully restored. She had thought it was gone forever! This isn't exactly a horror story, but I definitely count it as one. It was pretty freaky for me, especially since it happened so late at night...
But I don't blame Wattpad for this. It's just that, I was super stressed out- at the same time creeped out- when this happened. I hope you enjoyed the story!
