My mouth went dry when he said those words, and I knew that my eyes grew wide while my face became pale. Fear and adrenaline filled my body, and my heart started to pound faster and faster, feeling like a runaway train. "When?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Miles cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. He kept his eyes on me and studied me before he cleared his throat again. "Two days ago," Miles replied, finally. "He escaped two days ago."
I took a deep breath and tried to keep my feelings in check. However, it felt impossible when I felt this sinking feeling of dread. "Um..." I shifted a bit and cleared my throat. "Would you like something to drink?"
"Water will be fine," Miles replied. He watched as I got out of my little nest and walked into the kitchen, staying silent. "We will keep you safe, Ms. Kent," he said, finally while I started to grab two glasses for the water. "He won't find you."
I pressed my lips together but didn't say a word. My hands shook while I grabbed two glasses and placed them on the counter. My heart pounded hard in my chest while his words rang around in my head.
He escaped. My father escaped. He was free.
I walked to the fridge and grabbed the pitcher of water that we used for clean water. My hand shook while I had the pitcher of water, and some spilled on the shelf. Biting back a sigh, I put the water pitcher back onto the shelf and opted for water bottles instead because I knew that if I didn't, then I would make a huge mess.
Miles stayed silent and watched me walk back into the room. He placed his phone away quickly, and I noticed that he looked a little guilty before he was able to cover it up and make sure that his face was blank. "Thank you," he said and cleared his throat, taking the bottle from me.
I didn't say a word and walked back to my little nest. I sat down and pulled my blankets around me. I didn't make a move to open my water because I was shaking so much.
Miles sighed and moved a hand across his bald head. He cleared his throat and shifted on in his seat. "As I said, we will make sure that you stay safe and that he will not find you."
I hesitated but nodded, deciding to trust him because I knew that he could find some way of doing it. "What if he does find me?" I asked, my thoughts going to Robbie. "I can't stay here if it means that it's going to hurt Robbie."
"You aren't leaving, though," Miles said and cleared his throat. He shifted in his seat and then leaned back. "You are safer here than you are somewhere else." He paused and studied me. "However, I do suggest you asking who is at the door anytime someone knocks." He gave me a pointed look, and I knew that he wanted me to obey.
Hesitantly, I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. I set my water down next to me and stayed silent. I had no idea what they had planned, but I had a feeling that they weren't going to tell me, especially since it could lead to my death.
"Shall I keep a record as to who arrives and leaves the house?" Travis asked. "I can send it to you."
"How can you send it without Robbie finding out?" I asked. I didn't want Miles to know who came into the house because there were more times than not. Robbie had "lady friends" over. I knew that there would be more of them because he loved the playboy lifestyle.
"I have my ways," Travis said, and I had a feeling that there was a smug tone in his voice.
"Please," Miles said. "I want to know when and if Ms. Kent leaves the house and with whom." He sent me a warning look when I opened my mouth to retaliate, and I closed it without saying a word.
"Of course," Travis replied.
There was a ding on my IPad, and I pulled it towards me and clicked open the message.
He will not know about Mr. Kent's nightly activities, Travis said, and I frowned because I had a feeling that he would find out if they watched the house.
"What is it?" Miles asked. He studied me and frowned, trying to see what had caused me to be more upset.
"Nothing," I said and turned off the IPad. I cleared my throat and shifted in my spot. "You do know about his..." My throat closed, and I couldn't finish my sentence. I knew that there were reports about him being a playboy in the news outlets and wanted to make sure that Miles was aware that he was true.
There was another ding from my IPad, but I decided to ignore it because I knew that it was from Travis.
Miles nodded. "I am," he confirmed. He cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. "I want to make sure that your doors are locked at every time when they are over," he said, and I shrugged.
"I normally do," I whispered. "I trust Robbie, but I don't trust the females that he brings over."
Miles nodded in confirmation. "Of course," he said. He cleared his throat. "If I have any information, I will give it to you." He stood, and I bit back a groan but stood as well. "Again, don't leave. You will be safe here, and your father won't find you. Is that understood?"
I hesitated but nodded. "Ok," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I trust you."
"Good." He nodded. "Travis, keep me updated on Ms. Kent's whereabouts," he said. "I want to make sure that she stays where she is supposed to be. Is that understood?"
"Of course," Travis said. "I have your information set already in an encrypted file that Mr. Kent can't get into. I will keep you updated about her whereabouts."
"Good." He looked at me. "Make sure that this doesn't affect your abilities to act," he warned, and I looked down because there was a high chance that it did. "We don't want Mr. Kent to know that anything is wrong. Understood?"
I hesitated but nodded. "Of course," I said. "Let me show you to the door."
He nodded, and I walked with him to the door. "Thank you for the water, Ms. Kent," he said when I opened it to let him out. "Make sure that you ask before you open the door starting today. Is that understood?"
I nodded. "Yes, Sir."
Miles nodded and left, and I silently closed the door behind him, praying that he was right and my father wouldn't find me. If he did, then I had no idea what would happen with Robbie.
I prayed that he would stay safe no matter what.
