I shook my head and didn't say a word while I turned my attention back to the closed menu in front of me. I bit the inside of my lip while I looked at it, not knowing if I should try to get something else but not wanting to at the same time.
Robbie cleared his throat and shifted in his seat, and I looked at him while I raised an eyebrow in question. "Ok, going back to what I was saying before we were rudely interrupted, what were you going to say about the top sirloin?"
I shook my head and sighed, moving a hand through my hair while I looked at him. "I do not need a filet mignon," I said. "A top sirloin is good enough for me."
"No, it isn't," Robbie said and shook his head. "It's a cheaper piece of meat, a-"
"And it's all that I can handle at the moment, Robbie," I said, interrupting him with a shake of my head. I sighed and shook my head before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat with my cheeks turning red. "Well, it's at least the only thing that I want to handle."
Robbie scowled and narrowed his eyes. Concern filled his eyes, and he looked me up and down from what he could see, biting the inside of his lip while he didn't say a word.
I tried to hold his gaze for as long as I could before I looked down, not able to hold it any longer while I pressed my lips into a thin line. I didn't say a word while I waited for him to do something or say something, knowing full well that he was going to ask me how I felt.
"Are you ok?" he asked and cocked his head while he studied me. "Or are you sure that you are ok, Kit? You have been too quiet, and I do not like it at all."
I sighed and moved a hand across my face while I pressed my lips into a thin line. "I am just tired, is all, Robbie," I said with a shake of my head. "Remember, I had a nightmare this morning and hadn't been able to sleep."
Robbie frowned and narrowed his eyes just a tad. He set his jaw and studied me, silently urging me to continue.
Again, I shook my head and cleared my throat while I shifted in my seat. "We can talk about it later, Robbie," I said. "Please, let's not ruin this evening. Ok?"
Robbie set his jaw tighter and shook his head. "Nothing you say or do will ruin this "date," Kit,"' he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Don't say that it will because it will not."
I shrugged and grimaced. "I know, but I would like to talk about it later, please," I said, my voice barely above a whisper before I cleared my throat. "Please, Robbie."
Robbie sighed and slowly nodded, relenting, and I couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief.
Oh, thank God.
"But we are talking about this in the car when we are done, Kit. Is that understood?" He scowled and narrowed his eyes in warning.
I sighed and nodded. "Ok," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted in my seat. "Now, what are you wanting to eat, Robbie?" I asked, changing the subject while I fiddled with the menu.
Robbie stared at me with wide eyes and an opened mouth. "I told you, Kit," he said. "I am going to be ordering oysters."
I looked at him through my eyelashes and pressed my lips into a thin line, amused. "And why are you stating that you are going to order them when you are not going to eat them?"
Robbie bit back a small laugh. "I don't know why you don't believe me, Kit," he said with a shake of his head. "I am going to eat them, and I am going to enjoy them, too." He cocked his head and smiled, and I held back an eye roll.
"Un huh, sure," I said, sarcastically. "Is this really a hill you want to risk dying on, Robbie?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question with a small smile.
"Yes," Robbie said and smiled innocently. "This is a hill that I am willing to die on."
"I am not going to share my food with you. You do realize that, right?" I raised an eyebrow in question.
"Yes." He nodded in confirmation. "I am well aware that you will not be sharing your food with me."
I placed my elbow on the table and rested my chin on my hand while I stared at him with a small smirk on my face. "Ok, do you want to make a bet?"
Robbie raised an eyebrow and leaned forward, resting his hands on the table. "Ooh, and what type of bet are you talking about, Ms. Kent?" he asked with a small smirk on his face.
"What about we make a bet about the oysters? If you eat a plate of oysters, then I will pay for the meal."
"Seems fair," he said and shrugged while he grimaced. "And what if I lose the bet?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
"You may order your normal, but you have to pay for the oysters as well. We can not have it taken off the bill. Is that understood?"
"And what if they take it off the bill anyway?" Robbie asked while he cocked his head and studied me.
"Then we are going to add it back onto the bill and pay for it. You are not leaving the restaurant until you do."
Robbie laughed and nodded. "And will you make sure that Mr. Cromwell knows about our deal?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
"Yes," I said and nodded in confirmation. "I will make sure that he knows."
"Hnmmm." He wagged his finger teasingly while he narrowed his eyes and smiled. "You drive a hard bargain, Ms. Kent," he said. "You do know that I hate it when you spend your money when we are in a setting like this. Right?" He raised an eyebrow in question.
"I know," I said and nodded with a small smile on my face, "but that doesn't mean I won't back down from this, especially since you want to be a pain in the butt."
Robbie tucked his head closer to his chest and weighed the pros and cons while he studied me. "Are you at least going to be using our card?" he asked, talking about the credit card that we shared and contributed to equally.
I shook my head no.
"What about the joint account Mom and Dad set up for us?"
Again, I shook my head, not saying a word.
Robbie scowled and narrowed his eyes. "You are not using your own card for this. You worked hard for that money, Kit."
"Which is why I am going to be using it," I said with a shake of my head. "You can not stop me from using it, Robbie."
Robbie narrowed his eyes further while he scowled and studied me, and finally, there was a look of defeat in his eyes while he sighed and tucked his head closer to his chest.
"Well?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question with a small smirk on my face. "Care to take a gamble?"
Robbie wagged his finger playfully while he scowled, and I bit back a small laugh. "You do drive a hard bargain, Ms. Kent," he said.
"I know," I said and leaned back in my seat, folding my arms across my chest and leaned back in my seat. "So are we going to bet on this or not?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
Robbie sighed and moved a hand through his hair, looking very annoyed but also very amused. "Yes," hs said and nodded in confirmation. "We are going to do the bet, and you, Ms. Kent, are going to lose." He flashed me a teasing wink with a small smile on his face.
I laughed and nodded. "Of course, I am, Mr. Kent. Of course, I am." I leaned further back in my seat and tapped my finger against my arm while I smirked. "I'd like to see you try to eat and finish those oysters. It'd make my day to see you fail."
