CHAPTER TWENTY SIX;
❝ THE MADNESS WITHIN ! ❞⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀Everyday, it was like someone was slicing apart her brain with the sharpest blade to exist, over and over again. Madam Pomfrey tried her best, even spent half her time in the library, poring through every medicinal book and brewing every concoction and potion that looked like it might even just remotely work. Muggle painkillers had also been brought in, but nothing worked. Dumbledore had gotten Madam Pomrey and Professor Sprout to take her to St. Mungo's Hospital but everything they gave Manon, had already been given to her by the school nurse. To cope with it all, Manon had started to throw back sleeping concoctions whenever she didn't need to be awake because sleeping without them was about as impossible as winning against a dragon without magic.⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀Manon couldn't even concentrate enough to write even a small letter to her parents. Her professors had exempted her from assignments and homework, providing her with their own self-made notes when she had to study, and made all her tests and assessments oral. They just called her to their offices later in the evening of the test day, and asked her questions which she answered really well, despite her condition.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀James, Sirius, Charlotte, hell, everyone who talked to her, kept their voices to a loudness just a decibel higher than a whisper. And it all made her feel terrible, being the cause of disruption in the normalcy cycle of their days. While she knew it wasn't her fault, she was the cause of it, anyway.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀Walking through the halls, books in hand, with James, Jeremy and the boys surrounding her like a ring of bodyguards, made her take a deep look at all her surroundings. How much things had changed in just barely a year: she came laughing and formed a pack of her own and was now one member less, with two indefinitely sick, including herself.
⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀The stone walls that protected them had already fallen once. The student body had nearly been cut to half as panic-stricken parents pulled their kids out, like their small-space-occupying and unprotected homes could keep them safe. The loud, boisterous laughter that once bounced off the Hogwarts walls of students whose worries were limited to OWLs and NEWTs, fake friends and romantic competitors, were now made aware daily that they were all fighting something much bigger, much stronger and much more dangerous. Everyday at breakfast, the lost names of their fellow students slipped through Dumbledore's mouth, which had left school either by graduation in the past few years or by thoughtless, frantic caretakers. The only encouragement they had to eat after that was that they would need all the energy they could get, in case of another attack.
