The silence lasted a few seconds. Meg opened her arms for a hug and looked at me expectedly with that smile. That damn smile that made everything seem like it was alright when now... I felt like it was mocking me. A haunt or a ghost from the past. I took a small step back; I'm not ready for this. I thought I was, but I'm not. Meg's smile falters and she slowly drops her arms.

"Ariel... What's wrong? You remember me, right?" she said gently like I was a scared animal. Maybe I am. Thoughts swirled in my mind and I looked into her eyes.

Why was she here? Hadn't she moved? What does she think of me now? Why is she not yelling at me or something, angry that I left her and the town without saying a word?

I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing would come out. I looked down at the sidewalk and fought down my flight-or-fight instincts. Silence filled the thickening space between us. Then Meg broke the tension.

"So, um... Long time, no see, eh?" She gave a nervous laugh. "I-uh-I said happy birthday to him. Thought you might like to know. Did you visit him today? I figured you probably did unless I'm wrong. Maybe I am. I don't know." Meg shut herself up before she could ramble on more. I chuckled a bit; she hasn't changed much. I clear my throat before the silence could interrupt us again.

"N-nice to see you, too... Meg," I managed to stutter out as I forced myself to look back up. Meg's face lit up like the sun. Too bright, I thought. Meg closed the space between us and excitedly scooped me into a hug, lifting me a little.

"Oh my god, I'm so glad. It's been so long. I thought I'd never see you again," she practically squealed.

"Yeah, yeah. Me too," I muttered. She was so close, I tried my best not to show how much I was blushing. Hopefully, it was working.
