It was now mid-December. Amelia always loved this time of year whenever snow covered the grounds of Hogwarts.
She loved feeling the warmth of fireplaces, sipping warm apple cider, and spending time with friends and family.
She felt a sudden tug on her heart, knowing she wouldn't be with Draco for Christmas and she wouldn't see him for 3 weeks.
She wondered what he planned on doing for the holiday. He hadn't really talked much about his family, other than the fact that their relationship was strained.
Amelia wiped a snowflake from her face. That was another thing she enjoyed, snowflakes. And the sound of snow crunching beneath her feet.
The crunches filled her with excitement as she walked toward the edge of the lake.
She had received an owl that morning from Draco giving her strict instructions on where to go for their 'date'.
But if anyone asked, private tutoring. Of course.
She spotted a small speck developing on the horizon as she approached the spot Draco had directed her to.
He was sitting down on a blanket, facing out towards the water. He looked so peaceful.
The crunch of her steps alerted him to her presence, and he stood to greet her.
"Hello darling." He opened his arms and brought her in for a hug, kissing the top of her head.
God, how she loved that.
"Hello." She smiled warmly at him.
"What's this?" she asked pointing to the blanket and also a basket she hadn't noticed before.
"Well, I thought we could have a picnic date." He said trying to seem manly as he did.
Amelia's heart squeezed with warmth, no one had ever done anything like this before.
But then again she'd only ever dated boys.
And Draco was a man.
He popped open the basket and took out a bottle of wine as well as a charcuterie board, color Amelia impressed.
She also couldn't help but notice he seemed...nervous?
Draco? Nervous? She never thought she would see such a thing.
He carefully poured her a glass of wine and then held his up.
"To new beginnings."
Amelia clinked her glass.
"To new beginnings."
After they settled in, Amelia kept feeling that burning urge to ask Draco more about his family. All she wanted was for him to let her in and he had only showed her just a fraction of what she knew lied beneath.
"So, what are your plans for Christmas?"
Draco visibly tensed, his jaw clenching.
"For the most part, I'll just stay here."
Immediately, sadness plagued Amelia.
"Draco, you can't spend Christmas Day at Hogwarts."
"I don't. I spend Christmas Eve at my parents, and Christmas Day at a friend's house. But the rest of that time, I'm here."
