Emily found herself sat at the back of the choir room, beside Mike, talking to him and his friend Matt. The three of them found themselves in conversation surprisingly easily and Emily was actually quite enjoying their company and jokes. When the two boys started to shift the conversation back to football, however, Emily tuned them out a bit, her eyes finding Quinn, sitting on a chair in front of hers as she whisper-yelled at Finn, drilling him about not having a job yet.
"What about Target?" She asked.
"Tried." Finn shrugged. "Not hiring."
"Another doctor bill came to my parents' house last night, Finn." Quinn groaned, clearly annoyed. "We're lucky that I'm clever and intercepted it. But we have to start paying these doctor's bills or they're going to go to a collection agency and then my parents are going to find out that I'm with child. Your child."
Before Finn could even respond to that, Mr. Schuester walked into the room, already handing out some music sheets to the kids.
"All right, guys. We're doing a new number for Sectionals." He said, as Emily frowned at the paper in her hands, unfamiliar with the song. "I know that pop songs have sort of been our signature pieces, but I did a little research on past winners, and it turns out that the judges like songs that are more accessible. Stuff they know. Standards, Broadway..."
"Defying Gravity?" Kurt gasped excitedly. "I have an iPod shuffle dedicated exclusively to selections from Wicked. This is amazing."
Mr. Schuester smiled at him for a second then, before turning to look at Berry instead.
"Think you can handle it, Rachel?" He asked as the girl smirked.
"It's my go-to shower song." She said. "It's also my ringtone."
"Why do we have to go all vanilla on this song?" Mercedes asked, causing Emily to look away from a very upset Kurt and toward her instead. "See, what we need is my chocolate thunder."
Everyone laughed then, nodding along and mumbling their agreements. In spite of that, Mr. Schuester shook his head.
"Okay, we don't have time to rearrange a song for you, Mercedes. Rachel is singing it." He decided as Emily scoffed quietly. "Don't worry, we'll find something for you to dip in chocolate. On to item two. The school won't pay for the special bus we need to take Artie and his wheelchair with us to Sectionals."
"W-w-what?!" Tina asked.
"That's completely unfair." Rachel said.
"So we're going to have to raise money to pay for it ourselves." Mr. Schuester nodded in agreement. "See, when I was in glee club, and we needed new silk cummerbunds for Regionals, we held a bake sale."
"You're joking, right?" Santana scoffed after a second of silence from the students. "I mean, bake sales are kind of bougie."
"So hip people stopped eating delicious sugary treats?" Mr. Schuester asked.
"It's not that..." Brittany shrugged. "It's most of us don't know how to bake? I find recipes confusing."
"My family is fully committed to takeout." Rachel said.
"Well, Em bakes." Quinn pointed, as Emily rolled her eyes, throwing a ball of paper at her.
"Do you?" Kurt asked, turning to her surprised.
"I mean, kind of? I guess? I... I don't know." She stammered, a bit, uncomfortable with the sudden focus on her.
"Yeah, Mr. Schue, kids are busier than when you went here." Finn said, putting the conversation back on track, thankfully. "We've got homework and football and teen pregnancy... Lunch."
