I look around the Ballroom and notice that guards have already started to surround us as a forcefield is also created. The bullets deflect off.
But after a while, the forcefield crashes down, and me.
Cal pushes me over into the arms of a random guard as Cal calls his fire. I look to see that whoever is the cause of this attack, is all around us at the balconies.
And then I notice the details. The Cygnets.
This isn't the scarlet guard.
These are the Lakelanders.
I'm practically useless, I couldn't use my electricity even if I wanted to. The guard, a guster seems more useful in the field than guarding me so he hands me off to another guard- who is unfortunately an Arven. The Arven literally shoves me under a table and I roll onto my back. I lie down for a second to gather my thoughts.
I have to find Evangeline. Or maybe Lucas will help now. I get out from under the table and start running towards the metal princess sending shears of metal to the ceiling, where the attack is supposedly coming from.
My adrenaline is running high so I'm not surprised when I start feeling the hum of the electricity, although it does take a toll on my strength. I meet Evangeline's eyes and I thankfully I don't even have to ask. Despite our differences, she runs over to me, quickly shatters the metal and says, "Now go make yourself useful, little lighting girl."
As soon as they come off, the feeling of being on one of my runners highs immediately hits me suddenly, I don't expect it, but I fully welcome this feeling. Maybe Julian was right, I just needed to wait for my powers to unlock.
I smile to myself, my lighting was back and I was happy, despite the situation. Finally, I take a moment to look around at the situation. Bullets seem to be randomly coming off of the walls, but they're not random...there's these shells coming off of them as soon as they ricochet. Meaning that they're not random, they're just being deflected...so there are a lot fewer sources.
And those stupid guards are making the situation worse. They're attacking at random, and none of them have a strategy. "
"Go protect the people you fools!" I shout at some of them. A few listen but a few continue to bullheadedly attack an enemy that is quite literally invisible.
"Looks like your backbone is back, I was wondering where it had been this week." Evangeline says.
I see Cal asking the guard where I am. And then he goes over to the table where I was previously at.
Mare, focus. I tell myself.
I run over to see Evangeline trying to block as many bullets as possible from hitting people. I track the source and realize I actually have to get up there. The 2nd floor in order To get close to the ceiling of this damn ballroom.
"Evangeline! Wait for my cue and direct all of your metal towards the target." I yell. She simply nods and continues to fight. I can't make the field without trapping myself in it. I run upstairs through one of the red servant stairwells and get to the upper floor. There's no one here, and lots of dents in the floor and scattered bullets. And there are the targets. I immediately get to work forming a huge electrical net separating the upper and lower floors, meeting halfway at the grand stairwell.
