John swallowed, his grip on his bag tightening. It had taken a while, but with the help of his friends he was able to move his stuff into his dorm. He had a dorm to himself, apparently only a few students would double up. Now he stood in front of the large black doors. His day would start and end with the orchestra. First period would be smaller considering some students would be participating in the marching band. Maybe John would too, next year that is. His last period would be the largest since everyone would be there.
Honestly this set up was probably bad considering he would be thinking about orchestra all day. That wasn't the point though.
He sighed before taking a deep breath and pushing the doors open. The sound of chatter filled his ears. He passed many on their way out to the field for marching and others who were cleaning their instruments for practice. There was a loud crash somewhere followed by laughing and a few shouts and the eventual scolding from a director, likely Darren. John found himself smiling as he entered the room. He spotted the piano from the door and bolted over to it. It was the same one he "auditioned" on still clean and likely tuned.
"Okay!" A loud clapping sound came from the door and Vaughn walked in through the door. "Welcome, I understand this is not all of you, so I'll have to give this same speech later today. So for now, here's the simple version." A couple students laughed, others simply shaking their heads likely used to it. "Welcome to the Wellston Youth Orchestra, you are all very talented individuals and I look forward to having you all here. Understand that being in here will not be easy, you will have to constantly prove that you belong here." John gulped, he couldn't imagine being kicked out of the orchestra.
"Now, as I said before not everyone is here. I will be passing out music later today. For now, I need you to gather with your sections and...learn each other's names and such. Have fun." Vaughn received applause before people began moving. John looked around for other percussionist and found a guy waving a drum stick around. "Percussionists...meet with me." John hopped up from the piano and walked, trying not to skip, over to the guy."
John tightened his fist looking at the others gathered. They all look incredibly talented, and here he was getting in with a practice piece. The guy holding the drum stick had long blue haired pulled into a ponytail and shining emerald green eyes. He had a smirk painted on his face as he looked at those surrounding him. "Alright, I'm Kuyo, leader of the percussionist. I'm a third year in college, been here since I was a first year in high school." Johns eyes widened, if this guys been in the orchestra since he was a first year in high school then he was likely amazing. "I mostly play on the drum set, but if you need help with the timpani, the marimba, even the piano, I'm your guy." Kuyo hummed looking at the others.
"Since I know no one will volunteer to go next, we're just gonna go to the left." He said gesturing to the guy on his left. This guy had dark brown hair that fell down to his shoulders. He had baby blue eyes that were most definitely bored. "I'm Hector, I'm a fourth year in college, I just got in. I play marimba." Kuyo rolled his eyes faking yawn, "next!" A girl with pale pink hair cut into a pixie cut jumped, "uh I'm, Leona, I'm a fourth year in highschool. I play the snare drum." Leona jumped when Kuyo jumped over and put a hand on her shoulder. "Leona here is shy, but she's a badass snare player." Leona smiled but gently pushed the taller male away from her.
John focused on every person introduction, trying to remember them all.
Kuyo
Hector
Leona
Thalia
Evan
Alfredo-
"Ahem." The boy jumped when all eyes turned to him. "How about you?" Kuyo asked. John cleared his throat, "I'm John, I just transferred here as a third year, highschool that is. I play the piano, and have played it since I was little." He stopped before he went on for too long, but found Kuyo smiling at him. "Well welcome to the club John." Kuyo set a hand on his shoulder before he started counting. John arched an eyebrow watching the guy point to everyone. "One, two, three...seven! I got seven! Eat shit Rei!" Kuyo screamed drawing the whole rooms attention. People looked at him like this was normal, most of them chuckling. Amongst those people was a guy with green hair who stood up and shouted back.
"I got twelve Kuyo!"
"What the hell! You had four last year!"
"Suck it!"
The room erupted into laughter and John found himself chuckling. "Those two are always competing to see who gets more people in their section." Leona giggled. John looked around the room, gaging what kind of people where in the orchestra. There was a pair of boys that ran in shouting "we're gonna be late!" They gathered their instruments before bolting back outside. A blonde sat near the flutes listening his blue eyes cold and unamused. There was a girl with pink hair laughing and trying to get the blonde to laugh. The purple haired violinist was leaned against the wall with the other violinist.
John was smiling and he was smiling brightly. He had made reached his dream and was going to keep working through it.
