CH 10

PRESENT

Two days. That's how long I had been conscious in this room now. I hadn't been allowed to leave but they had allowed Ello to visit me in here to my dismay. They'd given me books to read and exercises to do to improve my condition but all of it was drab and boring. I needed to go outside-  I hated being indoors for too long let alone labs or hospitals. Too many bad memories.

Ello leaned back in their metal chair, long white hair spilling out over the back and brushing against the floor. Their feet rested on the table crudely as they groaned. "Boring boring boringggg" they whined. I ignored them as I took this time to take in their appearance some more.

They didn't seem entirely real... Ello seemed like something out of a dream, some sort of ghost. Their nearly white skin was a stark contrast to my own tanned skin, making them seem even paler. Though Ello's skin and hair were very fair, their clothes were a big contrast. A jet black form-fitting soldiers suit- though it was much thinner than the others so Ello appeared much skinner and more ethereal than the actual soldiers. They were very thin too... hardly muscular at all. It was hard to imagine them being as strong as they were.

Bright, reflective icy eyes looked at me now, curious. "What?"

I looked away from Ello, looking down at the book in my hands. War and peace... I wasn't much of a reader so it was hard to pay attention. "Nothing... well... You can change the way you look, right? How does that work exactly?"

"I dunno how to explain in human words. Too hard," Ello said with a shrug. "I just do it, it is like breathing or blinking, it happens automatically but I can control it too,"

"That... kinda makes sense... why... why do you have that face still?" I found myself asking. It was unnerving to see my deceased friend's face on someone else. Especially since it was only his face and none of his other features like his hair colour or his freckles.

"Because you like it," They said simply.

"Could I ask you to change it?" I said now.

"You don't really want me to," They hummed now. "The head lies but the chest does not,"

I frowned. "Right... Well... what does your real face look like?" I changed the subject a tad.

"Don't have one," they shrugged.

"What do you mean? You've gotta have a real face...one that's your own,"

Ello stared at me for a long moment and for a second I wondered if I had upset them. "I am not human- I was not born like you were, I do not have a face," A conflicted expression crossed their face. "I am..." Ello frowned. "Gross,"

"Gross?" I repeated.

"Faceless," they clarified.

"I- I don't really follow,"

Ello shook their head. "I can show you but... only if that is a command. I do not want to,"

I nodded. "It's alright, you don't have to,"

I watched a smile appear on Ello's face. "You are kind,"

I gave them a strange look. "I wouldn't consider myself kind..."

"You want to see if your friends are okay don't you?"

"..." I looked away.

"Want to leave?"

"I do..." I admitted.

Ello stood from their spot at the mettle table and chairs and approached me on the hospital bed. I gave them a critical stare. "What did I say about touching me so much?"
