PRESENT

We ran, trudging through the heavy snow as fast as our feet would let us. I glanced around the group. Sean was dead, but these three... they still had a chance. I couldn't let them die. The groans and growls coming from behind us only spurred our group onwards. The zeds.

They moved slower during this time of year, but it wasn't slow enough as they were still too close for comfort. Not to mention there was bound to be another runner nearby, or by the sounds of it, two. We only had one bullet left and some knives, what good would that do? There wasn't supposed to be this many zeds in the area, yet here we were, running for our lives.

"I can't believe we just left him there!" Tiff cried, wiping her eyes as she ran.

"We didn't have a choice," Gen told her, looking concerned, her own eyes misty.

Though the zeds were out of sight, they were agitated by the gunshots and the screams of the runners. "Zeds will likely be active for a while, we need to find shelter so we don't run into any," I advised, looking around the area.

"That's likely our safest option," Klien agreed. The girls were silent as we searched for a building without broken windows. We looked for about 30 minutes before we found a decent two-story building.

Upon entering, Klien barred the door. The group visibly relaxed, but only slightly. We still had to be on alert if we were found. I watched Tiff go take a seat in the room, setting her head in her hands. Gen came up next to her and put a hand on her back. Seeing Klien at the stares, I wordlessly followed him up.

Everything was too rotted and ransacked to be able to tell what this place used to be, but I didn't care. We didn't choose the place for its history anyway. When we reached the second floor, the two of us looked around without a word. I didn't find anything of value and it seemed that Klien didn't either. I approached a balcony door and opened it, stepping out into the cold. I sat on a convenient seat and stared out at the road.

This place was a decent find. We could watch the road from here, a safe distance away from anything that could be a potential threat. My eyes flicked up from the road when Klien stepped out.

"You really want to be sitting in the cold right now?" he asked.

I shrugged. "I'll be okay,"

"You could get sick," Klien warned.

"Have you ever seen me sick?"

Slowly, he shook his head. "Only minor infections because you can be a dumbass and not clean wounds correctly,"

I smiled a little. "But ultimately I am fine in the end,"

Klien sighed. "I suppose you're right. Still, would it kill you to be a normal person for once, and hang out inside?"

I shook my head this time. "I need to keep watch, look" I pointed out, down the street to a zed that stumbled around. "Ones already out this way. It's only a matter of time before there's more... maybe we shouldn't have stopped..."

"Where are we supposed to go if we keep moving? They pushed us in the opposite direction we came. Going around them would likely be just as dangerous... really the only thing we can do is wait this out..." He said with a frown.

"What if it lasts a while? How much food do we have?" I found himself asking.

"Not much... we weren't supposed to be gone longer than two or three days at the very most,"

"Do we have any contact with camp?" I asked next.

"No, our radios don't work this far out..."
