Akaashi grabbed his bag and waved goodbye to his friend from home room, Yoshihiro. Yoshihiro flashed a smile, then walked off towards yearbook club's club room. Akaashi walked in silence out of school. He froze when he heard a loud bellow in the distance.
"HEY, HEY, HEY!" Akaashi snapped his head in the direction of the noise. At least 30 feet away from him was a small group of boys with another loping towards the group with a contagious smile. He had bleach white hair with black streaks. The boy looked over from his friends and made eye contact with Akaashi. The strange boy's eyes were a bright golden hue, but that's all Akaashi could make out before he forced himself to whip his head the opposite way, breaking their eye contact.
Thoughts began to race through Akaashi's mind. He sped walked away and turned a corner. Only then did he allow his hasty pace to falter. Oh no. He noticed me. He probably thinks I'm stalking him. Did he recognize me? He's not in any of my classes, so he must be either older or younger. He was pretty tall, so I'm betting older... Akaashi began recalling the image of the boy to his mind. Most people didn't know this, but Akaashi has a photographic memory. He didn't usually tell people because his 'friends' in middle school would always use him to their advantage, asking him if he remembered what homework they had for the day, or what projects were due at the end of the week. And when he didn't remember, they would scold him saying things like "you and your dumb 'photographic memory' are useless" or "You claim to have a photographic memory, yet you can't remember one thing?" Akaashi bristled as he remembered those bad memories. He brushed them away and focused on the image he had summoned to his mind. The boy was muscular and tall. Akaashi assumed he played some sort of sport. Akaashi let his mind wander and took a left turn, advancing towards a small corner store. He walked in and purchased a wrapped onigiri. He walked out, and unwrapped the delicate plastic around the rice ball. He gently bit into it, savoring in its flavor. Akaashi had forgotten to pack a lunch, so he was kind of hungry.
Akaashi continued to walk down the sidewalk, slowly enjoying his onigiri. Akaashi's heart stopped for a split second as he felt something whisk past his face. He stood there dumbfounded for a moment, before he whipped his head around to see a small boy, running in the opposite direction. Suddenly the little boy stopped and turned around. He brought his hand up to his head and flashed the L with his fingers, snickering mischievously. Akaashi thought that the boy was gesturing to him, until the boy began to speak.
"Haha, Kou! You're too slow to catch me, I'm too fast!" the boy exclaimed. Now that he was turned around, Akaashi had a mediocre view of the boys face. The boy was wearing a striped tee shirt with soft yellow and white hues. His dark gray shorts were slightly wrinkled and stopped just above his scratched and bruised knees, which had bandaids scattered here and there. He was wearing socks and sandals, causing Akaashi to gawk at how he was running in them. The boy had a soft and pudgy complexion. His cheeks a light shade of red due to the running. He watched as the boy's chest heaved up and down, panting from exhaustion. The boy was still a solid 40 feet away, so Akaashi couldn't make out much more besides his distinctive golden eyes and his messy black hair all askew.
The boy obviously wasn't talking to Akaashi, considering the nickname he had used. Kou... thought Akaashi to himself. Do I know someone with a name somewhat like Kou...? No... he thought, I don't... Suddenly, Akaashi heard quick approaching foot falls behind him. They sounded as if the person was coming in at a sprint. Akaashi turned around, and to his surprise, saw the last face he thought he would have seen that evening.
There's no way. This has to be a coincidence... right?
The boy from earlier. The tall, loud one. He was running full speed at Akaashi. It was only when the boy was about 10 feet from Akaashi did he realize he was about to run into him. The boy slid to a halt. His face barely an inch away from Akaashi's. Akaashi felt his face flush from his close proximity with the boy. They stayed that close for moments upon moments, neither daring to move even an inch. They were so close that Akaashi could feel the boy's hot breath against his skin. And could see every delicate eyelash as he blinked. He couldn't help but stare into the boy's stunning golden eyes. The boy chuckled awkwardly and grinned sheepishly.
