After everyone filed out of the bus, they were all asked to stand in a line. The line started with the youngest, going all the way to the oldest. Akaashi was somewhere comfortably in the middle, whereas Bokuto was closer to the front.
Akaashi felt his heart drop to his stomach as one of the cabin counselors announced that the bunk pairs would be assigned, not chosen. Akaashi frowned and looked at his feet as he waited to be assigned a bunk mate. Akaashi perked his head up when he heard Bokuto's name being called. And following right behind it, his own. Akaashi couldn't help but smile.
Maybe these next two weeks won't be too bad after all...
As the other pairs were being called, Bokuto leaned forward and glanced down the line of boys. Akaashi saw the slight movement out of the corner of his eye and turned to see. His eyes widened as he made eye contact with Bokuto's bright golden eyes. There were five other boys between the two, and they seemed to not notice the falter in their straight line. And if they did, they didn't care. Bokuto beamed and gave a small wave. Akaashi snickered quietly and waved back.
"Hey hey hey! Akaashi!" Whisper-yelled Bokuto. Suddenly, Bokuto was poked lightly in the shoulder by one of the older kids and flinched. The older boy held up a finger to his lips, signaling for Bokuto to quiet down. Bokuto rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment and apologized to the older boy. Akaashi straightened out as well, not wanting to get on the older kids' bad side.
After all the bunk mates were assigned, they all went to their cabins. There were four different cabins on the camp grounds. Rattle Snakes, Mountain Lions, Desert Jackals, and Barn Owls. Bokuto and Akaashi were in the Barn Owl cabin with six others. One was named Kuroo, whom Bokuto had immediately befriended. Akaashi had also made friends with Kuroo's buddy, Kenma. The all decided to choose the bunks closest to each other.
...............................
That night, Bokuto called Akaashi up to the top bunk.
"Psssst! Kaashi! Come here!"
Akaashi gave him a quizzical look then clambered out of the bottom bunk and carefully climbed up to Bokuto's "fortress" as Bokuto called it. Akaashi sat cross-cross on the bed, trying to make out Bokuto's blurry outline in the dark.
"What do you need Bokuto-san?"
"I wanted to tell scary stories!" whispered Bokuto as he flicked on a dim flashlight. He held it under his chin, causing it to cast strange shadows over his face. Akaashi sighed and rubbed his eyes, his arms heavy from exhaustion.
"Alright, but not for too long. I'm tired, ok?" Instructed Akaashi quietly.
"Right!" Said Bokuto, nodding his head vigorously. Akaashi sighed and settled across from Bokuto, leaning against one of his extra pillows.
"Jane wore a yellow ribbon around her neck everyday. And I mean everyday, rain or shine, whether it matched her outfit or not. It annoyed her best friend Johnny after awhile. He was her next door neighbor and had known Jane since she was three. When he was young, he had barely noticed the yellow ribbon, but now they were in high school together, it bothered him. "Why do you wear that yellow ribbon around your neck, Jane?" he'd ask her every day. But she wouldn't tell him. Still, in spite of this aggravation, Johnny thought she was cute. He asked her to the soda shop for an ice cream sundae. Then he asked her to watch him play in the football game. Then he started seeing her home. And come the spring, he asked her to the dance. Jane always said yes when he asked her out. And she always wore a yellow dress to match the ribbon around her neck."
