CHAPTER ONE
i have better things to do

---

THE KUTZTOWN CITY ORPHANAGE WAS the place that Felicity lived in ever since she was seven. She could thank a drunk driver for that. Fortunately for her, though, Kutztown treated her and the other girls like actual human beings; she expected the experience to be a lot like Little Orphan Annie where Miss Hannigan forced her little girls to live off of hot or cold mush, but boy, was she wrong. Here, she was served actual food, had to do minimal chores instead of cleaning the ten-story building from top to bottom, had incredible schooling, and was free to do anything along the lines of the rules, which everyone respected due to the facility runners having admiration towards them. Plus, there was no Miss Hannigan, which was a plus in Felicity's book.

Felicity roomed with girls ages fourteen through sixteen with her being fifteen herself. Due to them being so close in age, they all got along like sisters, both in a good way and a bad way. Her closest friend, Margaret, was the same age as Felicity, and they tended to get into very deep conversations whilst everyone else slept.

In the current morning, Felicity was shaking Margaret awake and in a very ecstatic manner, at that. "Marge." She held out the sleeping girl's nickname. She groaned, signaling she was awake, though, she twisted her body so that she didn't face her friend. After all, her morning breath alone was all it took to wake up Margaret.

"Marge!" Felicity called again, and shook the girl's shoulder at a faster rate. Margaret's head finally shot up, and she rubbed her eyes red, looking Felicity in the eye.

"What?" she grumbled. She darted her eyes to a nearby clock, which read eight in the morning. "You owe me for at least three more hours of sleep," she quickly quipped, only audible to the ears of Felicity.

"Oh, you'll be asleep until supper at that rate," she smiled.

Margaret yawned. "What are you doing waking me up at the crack of dawn, anyway?"

Felicity cocked her head. "You have absolutely no idea, do you?" The other shook her head. "It's adoption day!"

"Oh, yeah, I forgot." She replied to this statement in a rather monotone voice, and it made Felicity concerned for her pessimistic friend.

"How could you forget?" There was no reply. "Is it because nobody adopted you yet?" Margaret shrugged, "So that's definitely the reason." She felt her arm move; the girl had shoved her, but a small smile was planted on her face.

Felicity dragged Margaret up from her bed, "Come on," she sang, "we gotta get ready." She felt herself move to her dresser and tossed a pair of clothes onto Margaret's lap. "Let's go!"
