Jennie's POV

“You’re going to stay with me...right?” i mumbled, looking up at the detective who had propped herself in my windowsill.

Her badge peaked from behind her suit jacket, glittering under the light from the kitchen. I could see her looking at me now, her eyes examining the way i huddled in the corner of the couch.

She had been by my side for nearly forty-eight hours now, not that she was a stranger. I often served her on her way to work, selling her a coffee and sometimes a pastry if she got up early enough for them to be coming out of the oven by the time she walked through the doors.

Now, she was seeing me in a different light.

Rosie tried her best to send me a comforting smile. “I’m not going anywhere. Try to rest.”

After being attacked on my way home from work, to say i was on edge would be an understatement. Rosie knew that look in my eyes and she was there to make me feel better.

Thankfully, the detective had not left my side since i had arrived at the precinct. I was under her personal surveillance, per her request.

I swallowed thickly, attempting to rid of the lump that had overtaken my throat. Rosie glanced at me again, letting her eyes linger softly.

“You can sit over here, I don’t want you to be uncomfortable if you’re stuck here.” i attempted to laugh, myvoice clipping pathetically.

“I’m not stuck here, I chose to stay with you.” She moved towards me, taking a seat on the opposite end of the couch. I watched her closely, tucking my feet beneath me.

“You can rest too...” i started, “As long as you’re here when I need you, I’m okay.” my eyes found hers.

Rosie looked at me with soft eyes, sliding closer to me. “I’ll be here if you need me. I promise you that.” Her hand found my back, tracing light circles with her palm.

When i flinched she started to retract her hand and mumbled a quick “sorry”. I turned my head to her, an apologetic smile gracing my face.

“It’s not your fault,” i found her hand, guiding it back to its position against my shoulder blade. Rosie smiled and continued to softly rub my back.

“How about you get some sleep, you deserve it.”

I moved to lay down, she adjusted the blanket to cover my feet and my cheeks spread into a blush. “Thank you.”

It was only three hours into the morning when i stirred awake. The moon nearly blinded me through the window.

At a crash that echoed somewhere in the dark, i jumped up, flinging the blanket off of me. My heart began to race in my chest as sweat grazed my palms.

“Detective Park.” i whispered harshly, my eyes trained in direction of the dark kitchen. “Detective...” i cut myself off when i found that the other end of the couch was empty, the blanket thrown back.

I began to panic, searching the living room for any sign of her. When nothing caught my eye i stood slowly and quietly, reaching for the baseball bat besides the sliding glass door.

A rustling from the kitchen caused me to spin on my heel, the bat raised into the air. Quietly, i stepped forward.

I winced at the sound of the floorboard squeaking underneath me. I held my breath, squeezing my eyes shut to bite back the whimper that threatened to tumble from my lips.

Tears were beginning to slide down my face as i moved closer to the kitchen, my hand hovering near the light switch when i reached the doorway.

I took a heavy breath, preparingyself before switching the light on.

When you did, my heart sunk at the sight before me.

Rosie was dropped to her knees on the ground, cupping shards of glass together. She looked up at me with a shocked look, sending you an apologetic smile.

“I...uh, I was...I was trying to get a glass of water...” Was all she said as she looked up at me, frozen in her place. She stopped to examine me, the bat raised to my shoulders and tears streaming down my face.
“Oh,” she gasped sympathetically, standing quickly and placing what was left of the glass onto the counter.

She moved to me and cupped my face between her hands, “You’re okay.” She assured me, brushing her thumbs against my cheeks.

Without thinking, i collapsed into her chest and let the sobs i had been holding muffle into her shirt.

“Hey, you’re safe.” She sighed, pressing her hand into the back of my head.
“ You’re safe.”

Rosie's fingers threaded through my hair, rocking me softly. She closed her eyes and pressed her forehead to the top of my head.

I had never really noticed the way she smelled; like vanilla so faintly that it almost tickled my nose to breathe her in.

When she finally had me settled, she aided me into the living room to sit on the couch.

She could feel me shaking down to my bones and didn’t dare to let me go. The way i was clinging onto her, she didn’t think she had room to move anyway.

When i realized how tightly i hung to her shirt i shuffled away from her. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have...” i trailed off, wiping the tears from my face.

Rosie brushed her thumb against my cheek, sliding back towards you.
“It’s okay, I’m here for you.”

I glanced at her, meeting her eyes softly.

For a moment it was quiet, her eyes burned holes into mine as neither of us desired to look away from the other.

Her lips moved, as if she had something to say but no sound ever escaped. I waited for her to try again but instead she leaned forward slowly, pausing to examine my behavior.

“Is this...okay?” She questioned, her eyes flickering between me and my lips.

My stomach fluttered and i mustered up just enough courage to nod, lost in the enticing look on her face.

Eventually, she leaned in fully to connect our lips. She hesitated, afraid of scaring me. But i leaned into her, placing my hand against her leg to leverage myself to her taller frame.

She kissed me softly, moving slowly and predictably as to not intimidate me. I relaxed against her lips, her hand finding my face and stroking it comfortingly.

When we both came up for air, panting softly and looking at each other with dilated pupils, she smiled at me.

“I’m glad you’re protecting me.” i mumbled, causing her to chuckle softly.
