Jennie's POV
Park Chaeyoung , or Rosie Park to everyone else, is an absolute genius at Charms.
Not that she’s better than me; the two of us are widely regarded as the best Charms students to ever attend Hogwarts, finishing Flitwick’s curriculum years before we were supposed to.
That’s where we first met, actually- the two of us argued over who succeeded at Wingardium Leviosa first in first year. Despite being more of a perfectionist than a competitive person, something about me just infuriated Rosie, and i never shied away from a good math of wits.
Needless to say, we're the absolute best of friends now.
A good 5 years later, our rivalry is a lot more lighthearted, but the both of us have only become more competitive. Rosie earns hundreds of points for Ravenclaw, and i try to beat her every time. Even though there’s not many new milestones left to reach in Charms, rosie and me are still always battling to be the better one.
We are absolutely hellbent to become the first at creating our own spell, and i'm bursting with glee when i become the one to win.
When i burst into her dorm room and shout out, “I did it!”, rosie looks nothing short of crestfallen. There’s no need to explain what i mean, since the only thing the both of us are still competing for is to create a new spell.
“Really?” The disappointed look on my best friend’s face almost makes me regret your decision to announce it so boldly, but rosie still manages to grin and set her book down.
“I’m happy for you! What is it?”
I hesitate to explain that; to be fully honest, our rivalry with the other girl didn’t just produce a friendship. For all our bickering and teasing, i'm in love with Rosie, and i'm never going to tell her.
Well, at least not before i know she feels the same about me.
That’s what my new spell is for- i’ve created a way to view someone else’s dream. I haven’t tested it enough to be sure, but my best friend is always willing to help out, anyway.
Waving a hand in the air, i scoff, “That’s not important. What is important is that I need to test it on someone. You’re willing, right?”
“Sure.” rosie shakes her hair out of her face before sitting down on her bed and taking a deep breath. “It’s not going to hurt me or anything?”
“No, of course not,” i reassure her, raising my wand. “I think.”
“You think?!”
The other girl’s protests are cut off as a puff of pink and purple explodes between the two of us and we both slump to the floor.
-----
I gape when i come to again, sitting on the floor of my room. Rosie frowns at me with crossed arms, sitting on my bed. “What... what happened?”
“I don’t know either, you didn’t even tell me what the spell’s for,” she sighs, gesturing at the empty dorm room.
“Is this one of your dreams?”
It is, i realize quickly, scanning the room. Morning light shines through the open window, the beds in the dorms neatly made and everything cleaned out. Nobody’s been in here for at least a couple hours. It’s the exact dream i had last night, and- oh no.
As footsteps and laughter sound outside the door, i jump up, grabbing rosie’s wrist and attempting to pull her up.
“Quick, we’ve got to go.”
“What?” she asks, confused as i drag her around the room to look for more exit points. The talking gets loud enough for me to recognize that it’s the two of our voices, just like i expect.
“Jennie, what aren’t you telling me about this spell?”
“It’s not about the spell, it’s-”
The door to the dorm room bangs open, and i freeze as me and rosie stumble into the dorm room, laughing together and seemingly not noticing two people standing in the corner.
The other girl sends me an expression that’s confused, shocked, and incredulous all at the same time, but it completely changes to absolute disbelief as the other me kisses the other her right on the lips.
“I can’t believe we sneaked out of lecture for this,” dream-rosie laughs as she’s pressed into the bed, kisses being peppered on her neck and face. My grip on the real rosie's wrist loosens as the both of us watch in stunned silence.
“You don’t regret it though, right?” dream-me jokes, looking down at dream-rosie with pure love in my eyes. I wince at the sappiness of it all, not even daring to look at the girl standing stock-still next to me.
Dream-rosie grins and presses a kiss to my lips in the dream, whispering, “Never” as she slides her hands up in the air.
“Okay, that’s enough,” i protest, casting the spell again in desperation to end it all. When it doesn’t work, i rack my mind for the counterspell, waving my wand frantically. “Come on, come on-”
The scene of my dorm room fades back into rosie's as you curse in relief, flopping against the floor. “Ah... Rosie-”
“Did you really dream that?” The look on the other girl’s face is strange, and i can’t exactly read what she’s thinking.
I bite my lip, tentatively responding,
“I did. Please, it’s not what you think-”
“Oh yeah? What do I think?” For all her bravado, i can practically see the gears turning in rosie's head, figuring out what to say.
“That I have a crush on you?” i wince to say it aloud; it feels like giving up.
She raises an eyebrow, challenging me. “Well? Do you?”
There’s no way i can lie straight to her face now, even though i’ve been doing it for years. She’s seen evidence of my true feelings for her, and there’s nothing i can do to conceal it any longer. “Yes. I do. I’m sorry, rosie, I’m-”
A finger on my lips shushes me as rosie smiles gently. “Jennie, don’t apologize. I like you too.”
“Hm?!” is the only thing i was able to say, still being quieted. “Mm-”
“I’ve liked you since the day you argued with me about who cast the charm first. Well, maybe not that long,” rosie laughs, running her hands through her hair.
“It was definitely me, by the way.”
“Was not,” i argue, rubbing at my lips where i can still feel the warmth of my best friend’s finger.
“But that’s not the point. The point is... what do we do now?”
She rolls her eyes, tilting her head and watching me with those quick eyes that i love so much, pink lips curving into a smile. “Normal people would go on a date, Jennie.”
“Shut up,” i grumble, cheeks coloring. A beat of silence passes before i scoot slightly closer to the other girl, fingers just barely brushing over hers. “Hogsmeade, then?”
“Hogsmeade,” rosie agrees, lacing her fingers with mine. Just as i smile, euphoric, she interrupts the moment by saying, “I still can’t believe you dreamed about us kissing.”
“I said shut up!”
