Alaric arrives at the Salvatore boarding house.

"Thanks for coming, Ric," Damon says, then asks, "Can I get you something to drink? Coffee, bourbon? Bourbon in your coffee?"

"Elena and Caroline mentioned you needed my help," Alaric says.

"Yeah, we were hoping you could help shed some light on the Lockwood family," Stefan tells him.

"Now, why would I know anything about the Lockwood's?" Alaric asks.

"Well, you wouldn't. But your dead, not-dead vampire wife might," Damon tells him.

"Isobel's research from when you guys were at Duke together," Elena says.

"You said that she had spent years researching this town," Stefan tells him.

"Isobel's research here in Mystic Falls rooted in folklores and legends but at the time I thought much of which was fiction," Alaric tells them.

"Like that amazing vampire story," Damon says.

"Aside from vampires, what else?" Caroline asks.

"The lycanthrope," Alaric says.

"Wait, like werewolves?" Elena asks.

"No way, impossible, way too Lon Chaney," Damon says.

"Is it?" Stefan asks.

"I've been on this planet one hundred and sixty some odd years, never came across one," Damon tells them, then asks, "If werewolves exist, where the hell are they?"

"Why do you suspect the Lockwoods?" Alaric asks.

"Because vervain didn't affect the mayor at Founders' Day but the Gilbert device did and it affected his son Tyler. Although it also affected you, Caroline. Care to tell us something," Damon tells them.

"I don't know why it worked on me. Maybe I'm a different type of witch than Bonnie that caused the device to work on me, since I learned the spells a lot faster than Bonnie," Caroline tells them.

"Someone else that didn't act normal was Tyler's uncle Mason that exhibited inhuman behavior when he fought with one of the carnival's workers," Stefan tells them.

"It suggests it's some sort of a supernatural entity," Stefan says.

"We were hoping that Isobel's research could help us figure it out, what it is," Elena tells them.

"Well, all her things are still at Duke. I mean her office is still there. She's technically still missing," Alaric tells them.

"So can we get access to it?" Damon asks, then tells them, "Ric, we need to know what we are dealing with. If this wolfman thing is true, I've seen enough movies to know it's not good. It means Mason Lockwood is a real-life Lon Chaney ant that little Tyler punk may just very well be Lon Chaney junior, which means Bella Lugosi, meaning me, is totally screwed."

Gilbert Residence

Elena is packing for the trip to Duke. Stefan and Caroline are with her.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Caroline asks.

"Which part? Digging through my birth mother's life work or going to Duke with Damon?" Elena asks.

"Either, both," Stefan says.

"Well, I'm not sure about the first part but then again Ric is a good buffer so we can bond in our anti-Damon solidarity, and I can talk with Caroline. I wish you were coming though, Stefan," Elena tells them.
