TW: MENTIONS OF SUICIDE, BLOOD, AND DEATH.

The battle of Zhan Tiri was over. All our troubles are gone now. All the weight off our shoulders has been released and we can finally take a deep breath and relax. But there was still one problem.

A kid died.

No one knows who he is. He just showed up out of nowhere and sacrificed himself for Varian by jumping in front of him and getting impaled by a yellow rock that Zhan Tiri made. We haven't lost a Corona citizen in forever and we should have been more careful with this kid. I wish we knew his name and his parents. The funeral was last Tuesday and everyone in Corona attended. It was a stormy day when the funeral took place. We saw him be buried six feet into the ground and his lifeless face didn't move an inch. I remember that I was the first one to see him die. Varian didn't notice since he was on the run after falling off of his beast raccoon, Ruddiger. But no matter how much it hurts, we have to put it aside. It already happened, Corona is slowly being repaired after the war and we're doing just fine.

I invited Varian to go to the nearby Coronan park, where we sat down on a bench in the cool and windy night.
"We're finally free." I sighed in relief. Varian looked over in confusion. I don't think he knew what I meant by we're finally free.
"Welcome home. It's just you and me now, standing alone." I smiled as I relaxed my head on Varian's shoulder. "The world is ours." Varian seemed stiff. It was probably a good time to head him home now. I stood up from the park bench and held out my hand for the black-haired boy to grasp.
"No, it isn't." Varian muttered. He clutched his gloved fists and looked away from my (e/c) eyes.

"Get in the carriage," I demanded as I grabbed the alchemist's arm and tried speeding up my walking, my shoes clicking and clacking against the brick floor.

Varian blurted out what he looked like he had been holding for ages. "This isn't finished." I looked back at him and stared at his sapphire eyes in confusion.

"What?" I whisper-yelled to him. He gently pushed me back and grabbed his brown backpack off the floor, as he whipped around and started speed walking in the direction of his house.
"Even though the kid's dead, I'm still seeing red. I'm just a shell of his form that his innocence shed.." The alchemist admitted. Has he felt guilty about the situation for days? I can't blame him of course, a young boy that is even younger than him sacrificed himself for Varian, that is traumatic.

"He lived a good life and he gave it to you."

"Oh, is that right? You know it's not true. Look at him showered in blood and flowers, now look in my eyes she still holds the power." His eyes. They were normally a sapphire blue, but now they were a glowing cyan. He looked like he was on the verge of sobbing. His hair was going from jet black and a blue streak to a glowing cyan, the same color of his eyes and a white streak. His hair was flashing like a candle flickering. "After years and tears and confronting his fears, he's dead on his record for the world to hear." He sang out. His hair stopped changing and remained in its cyan look. "And they'll all think that it was suicide. But (y/n) I know it was you inside." It was suicide. I saw him jump in front of him and see him bleed out. He had quick blood loss and his face was getting paler and paler by the second. Not even Rapunzel could fix that. It was hopeless.

"I saved him, I held him 'Til the moment he died." I cried out as I put my hand above my chest. My eyes were stinging and felt like tearing up as if I were chopping onions. Why is Varian blaming me? I couldn't even save him if I could. Once she brought Cassandra back to life, I was certain the magic would bring the boy back to life. Boy, was I wrong?

"You choked him out of his own goddamn mind. You promised the world to him, a goddamn lie!" He cried out as he brought his hand up. A black rock crept up from the floor, more continuing to come up. I tried to get to higher ground, but he tripped me with a small black rock. It went through my shoe and stabbed my foot.

I let out a scream, "What do you want from me?!" How could Var blame me? I did everything I could!

"Oh, look outside yourself!" Varian boomed as he made the back rocks circle my wrists as a replacement for handcuffs. They felt cold and tight. He lent out a hand for me to take. He wanted me to help him out by taking over Rapunzel? Why was he acting like this? No, there's no way. He would never go back onto the path paved in black. Unless he isn't the one controlling himself.

"I won't help you take her down." I spat at him. He looked at me up and down in disgust. I know that this isn't the real him. I don't know how I can be so sure, but I just know how my best friend is.
"Fine. I'll do it by myself!" Varian scowled. He trapped my shoes with black rocks so that I would be unable to move and break free.
"You don't need it."

"Oh, I know that I need it."

"She's been gone for years, I know you can beat it," I spoke in a hopeful tone. It didn't help. Varian broke the rock around my wrists, but I was going to find out a way to get out of the ground.
"No, look in the mirror. You know we both fear her, we're one in the same. We're afraid to be near her. We utter the name with our spirits defeated. But you let me kill him You're worse than Rapunzel!" He screamed out. Varian reminded me too much about Cassandra, it was terrifying.
"I told you to end it, it was all for the best!" I scoffed as I jumped out of my shoes to get out of the black rock prison.

Every word that Varian spoke was left with a bitter tone at the end of it. "So I have you to blame for this pain in my chest."
"No!" I yelled out for mercy. He stroked a black rock from the floor. It stopped growing once the point got close to my neck.

"If you won't go I will to avenge the lost soul I killed," Varian spoke coldly as his hair slightly moved in the breeze.

"You're filling your heart up with hate
All the same "no!
As the kid   no!
That you just left no!
Face down on the no!
Pavement!" Save it!"

"It's time I made a statement. A pity the city has ruined us, we could've fooled Hollywood, Just the two of us. But Rapunzel has made a fool of us." He scoffed bitterly.

"You're lost." I chuckled as I stated the obvious.

Varian made a platform and stepped on it. He raised his hand which made the platform grow larger and larger. "One, two, three, four, is this what love is really for? Is this all I get for being yours? The kid in front of me in blood and gore?!" He questioned. How could I ever tell Rapunzel that my best friend just transformed into this?!
"Five, six, seven, eight, years put to waste for all I hate. They'll all know Rapunzel's fate
The show's about to start.
"Don't be late."

Every single black rock that Varian had made had gone back into the floor. Since he was on a platform, he started falling from a few feet high. I ran to him and let out my arms to catch. He kept getting closer to the ground and fell into my arms. His face was rested and calm, not like anything that I saw a few seconds ago.

I walked to the park bench we were sitting on earlier and let Varian's body slip onto the park bench peacefully. I touched his forehead with the back of my hand and I noticed that he felt as warm as an oven. I had to take him back to the castle.
