Harry sat patiently, which was his LEAST favorite thing to do. Umbitch's class would start soon and Harry was not excited. He had half a mind to skip, but he didn't want to risk getting more detentions.
"Today we will be discussing theology, and other religious beliefs," Umbridge started, which was a very unusual way to start a class that had nothing to do with theology.
Hermione's hand shot into the air, and Umbridge motioned for her to speak, albiet with reluctance. "Professor, I have read the class book front to cover and seen nothing that would prompt a discussion about warrent a discussion of religious beliefs. And according to Hogwarts: A History, discussion of religious beliefs in the classroom was outlawed twenty years ago." Hermione spoke with a suspicious undertone that Harry understood.
What was she playing at?
The pink hag tutted at Hermione. "I am the teacher, surely you are not undermining my authority? I know what's legal and illegal in the classroom, are you suggesting I do not?" She gave a smile which made Harry want to gag.
"I am merely suggesting, professor," she struggled to give her her title of respect, "That discussing theology with your students is againist the law and unhelpful to the curriculum." Though she was strongly opposed to the "curriculum," thinking the lack of spell casting was unhelpful, she knew that Umbridge had something worse up her sleeve with this simple theology talk. She could feel it in her bones.
"Twenty points from Gryffindor, and if you don't stop with the disrespect, it will be more and perhaps I'll add a detention," Umbridge snapped, then smiled, her eyes gazing bad to the class, "Now who would like to start our discussion? State your religion and what it means to you."
She went around the room, having students state their religious beliefs. Everyone seemed rather uncomfortable with the tension in the room. Religion was not commonly discussed in Hogwarts. It prevented arguing. Most people thought it was better to keep this type of thing to yourself. There were discussion groups sometimes, set up so you could argue your belief system with people who disagree, but these meetings had only a small attendence. There was a number of Christians, Atheists, Muslims, Pagans, Greek Mythologists, and a few wizard focused religions Harry hadn't heard of before.
Once everyone in the class had unwillingly and unenthusiasticly stated their beliefs, Umbridge stated: "You are all wrong, every last one of you, in your beliefs." Manu people took offence to this, sprouting off a mix of protests at the woman, but she talked over them, "In the beginning, there was only magic. That magic created life and the universe as we know it, and created more magic. The original magic, the magic that created everything, manifests itself in a host. This host is essentially a God. Once they die, the magic goes to another host."
"Assuming your previously unheard of theroy is true," Hermione asked, "Who's the current 'God?'"
Umbridge just smiled, as if the answer was obvious. That itself made the answer very clear:
Dolores Umbridge thought herself an actual God.
