(A/N I put a karaoke because it's you singing :) Hope you enjoy this abnormally long chapter)
As always, we start our meal with a prayer.
"Carlos, your turn," Dad says. Carlos and I grab Dad's hand and then stretch our other hands toward Mom's seat. The empty plate we set there to remember when Mom was here, stares me down, threatening to make me cry.
"Thank you for the leftovers and the power of the mighty microwave," Carlos smiles to himself. "Amen."
"Amen," I repeat.
As Dad hands us some spaghetti, I can't help thinking about music.
"I have to tell you something," Dad looks up from his food as Carlos takes a big bite of the spaghetti. I tell him about how I didn't perform and got kicked out of the music program. I say how I'm afraid Mom will be mad at me for not continuing to play music. How it feels like I let her down. By the time I'm finished my pants are soaked and my face is dripping with tears. Carlos stares at me wide eyed as he shoves more spaghetti in his mouth.
"Oh, (y/n)! It'll be okay! We'll figure it out, mija!" I nod, sniffling. "You can go. Eat later whenever you feel better."
I nod and quickly get up from the table. Once I'm in my room I walk over to my closet and grab a pair of grey sweats. I throw on an oversized yellow crewneck and walk over to my dresser. On top is my favorite picture of me and Mom. I hold it to my chest and cry some more. "I'm so sorry Mom. I didn't mean to let you down." I look down at it and move my head so tears don't fall on the glass. "I miss you so much."
I lift up my head from the photo. Faintly, I can hear loud rock music. It sounds like it's coming from moms studio. GUYS!
I quickly wipe my eyes as I set Mom back down on my dresser and run downstairs past Dad and Carlos. "I must have left the CD player on! I'll get it!" Before they can say anything, I'm out the door and at the studio.
I open the door and see Luke and Reggie facing Alex so none of them can see me. I can't believe them! "Guys!" They don't look. "GUYS! STOP!" Luke turns to me and plays a riff on his guitar. "STOP! CUT IT OUT!" Reggie turns around, sees me and stops playing.
I smile at him and turn to continue and glare at Luke and Alex. Luke finishes his riff and Alex finishes it off with a bu-bum.
"The whole neighborhood could hear you!" I exclaim. "Are you guys crazy?"
Luke's eyes widen. "Wait, people can hear us play?!"
I roll my eyes. "Yes! And so did my dad, and brother!"
Luke starts cheering. Alex looks at me confused. "Wait, so, only you can see us, but everyone can hear us?" I nod hesitantly. I guess that is a little weird. "I mean what kind of ghosts are we?"
"Who cares man! People can hear us play!" Luke fist bumps Reggie then Alex.
"We may be dead, but our music isn't!" Reggie laughs and fist bumps Alex.
I turn to the studio door just as my dad walks in. "Dad!"
"Hey. Just making sure you're okay." He says. I self consciously remember my red face and puffy eyes.
"Yeah, no, I'm all good. I just had to turn off the CD player." I gesture in its general direction. He eyes me wearily.
"Okay.." He turns toward the boys and his eyes widen. "Wait," Oh no! Can he see them?? "Is this the junk that was in the loft?" Oh thank goodness.
