Chapter 24:

I didn't expect the pie-off to be as big of an event as it was. It was even bigger than the block party. It seemed like everyone in town was at the diner today, and I heard some people say that people from a couple towns over where here as well. The crowd spilled out into the main road in front of the diner, and there were stands set up on both sides of the road. There was even a small stage constructed for when the actual pie tasting began. It was fucking insane. All of this over some pies?

"Good morning, Louis," Joan greeted as she walked over to where I was leaning against the diner's counter. "Didn't sleep well?"

I knew she was talking about the bags under my eyes and the yawn that escaped my mouth at just that moment.

"I slept great, well, until my over-ecstatic partner came knocking on my door at six in the goddamn morning," I drawled out, looking over at where Harry was talking to a small group of people. They seemed to be absolutely captivated by him, and I found that I couldn't blame them for it.

"Six in the morning? That's pretty early for a day you don't have to work. I'm sure Harry just couldn't wait to see you," She said, still hung up on her assumption that there was something there. I didn't even fight her on it this time, thinking of the small kiss that Harry left on my lips just hours ago.

"You were right when you said that Harry was a great baker," I noted, trying to change the topic. I didn't need to be reminded of Harry's feelings for me. They were unimportant. He wasn't a part of my mission. "I tasted the pie he made yesterday. It was probably the best thing I've ever tasted."

"I told you. He has a gift, that boy. I tried to get him to work here at the diner, but his heart was set on maintaining the flower shop. He loves it," Joan admitted, and I felt like I was getting in too deep when I remembered why Harry love flowers so much. These were little details I never expected to know when I first arrived here.

"Why are there so many people here?" I wondered, still seeing more cars drive into town and find parking spaces on the sides of the road. It wasn't exactly a tourism town. There was nothing much to see besides boring houses and small shops.

"They're here for the contest. The first pie-off was held as a fundraiser for the town, and people just really enjoyed the food offered during the event as well as the activities and games they could play. It's cheap entrance, and it's a nice day to spend with others. The pie-off is probably the second biggest event in this town," She explained.

"What's the first?"

"Our spring festival, of course! Harry's flower arrangements really stand out then, and that's a big part of what makes so many people come. He works hard to plan for it."

"Of course," I mimicked, looking over to see him talking to that girl from the flower shop that had a crush on him. Cynthia or Crysta or summat. I didn't really care for her.

Harry seemed to be chatting and smiling as usual, but I did notice the way he would glance over at me every now and then during the conversation. He would always quickly look away whenever our eyes met, blushing a bit which made the girl glance over at me as well, one eyebrow raised in confusion.

I turned to face Joan, looking away from them because I didn't fancy the attention.

"So, when does the actual pie testing take place?"
