I sighed as I unlocked the door of the the dismal building to let the others in.

Vaggie, rubbing her temples in frustration, sat on an overstuffed couch in the huge lobby.

A hand-painted sign, of my artistic skill, sagged to the floor in a reminder of my failure. The counter across from the entrance was littered with frozen food wrappers, cigarette butts and dirty dishes.

Anthony walked away, unaffected by the scolding he had received, and came back with a popsicle sticking out of his mouth.

"Y'know, it'd be a good idea to get some actual food in this place," he gave me a playful smirk, "for all these ex-blood suckers you got roamin' around here!"

I sat down on a nearby armchair. Not looking to him, I stayed silent as the humiliating events scrolled past my vision endlessly.

"Uh..." Anthony muttered. "Well...you've still got me here."

I could tell he was trying to lighten the mood, and I appreciated him for it, but it didn't help much.

"I'm going outside to make a call," I announced without emotion.

"You okay toots?"

I didn't answer as I pulled out my cellphone and walked out, slamming the door.

Scrolling through the contacts of my phone, I found the one I needed. I let it ring for a moment but it was sent to voice mail.

Shit...

"H-hey, Mom," I said in a positive tone. "I know you're busy...really busy..."

I sank down to the pavement. "But the...the interview didn't go well. I d-don't know if I'm going to make a difference," I sobbed quietly.

Hopeless tears ran down my cheeks.

"I...I think Dad was right...about me. I don't know what I'm doing; I could really use some help, Mom."

I remembered the things the news anchor had said, only adding to my breakdown.

"I need you, Mom. Please."

Wiping my tears, I put on a smile. "Ugh, sorry...I'll get off this before it gets long. Love you...bye..."

I hung up and, wiping my eyes, hurried inside.

The door silently closed as I leaned against it, sighing. But my pity party was cut short by a loud, song-like knocking.

My eyes flicked open in shock as the knocking continued in a rhythm. I stood back and debated whether I should open it, then I slowly opened the latch.

The tall, pale man before me stared into my eyes; his smile proudly showing blood-stained fangs. A tiny pair of spectacles sat on the bridge of his thin perked nose. He seemed surprised for a moment, but he quickly recovered.

"Oh my god..." I whispered under my breath as I recognized the dangerous vampire.

"Hel-"

I shut the door quickly and opened it again, to make sure my eyes were not tricking me.

"-lo."

Still there. I slammed the door.

"V-Vaggie?"

My friend let out a pained groan from the couch. "What?"

"The Vampire of the East Side is at the door," I said with a panicked smile.

"WHAT?!"

"Uh...who?"

I looked to the door. "What do I do?"

"Well, don't let him in!"

I nodded and walked over to open it again.

The vampire still stood, smiling, as he waited for me to answer. "May I come in?"

"You may," I said in an authoritative manner, then realized what I had done. "Wait-"

Before I could stop him, he rushed in.

"Alastor! Pleasure to make your acquaintance, sweetheart, such a pleasure!"

He pulled my arm and held his face close to mine. It was so close, in fact, our noses were touching.

"I saw your fiasco on the picture show, and  I just couldn't resist! What a performance!" He flailed his arms dramatically.

"Why, I haven't been that entertained since Glass's confession!" He adjusted his glasses and began to walk deeper into the building. "So many angry editors..."

As I stood, dumbfounded, Vaggie took action and held a wooden spear to his throat.

"Not another step," she hissed. "Hijo de perra. I know your game, and I'm not going to let you hurt ANYONE here!"

Unaffected, the man took a slender finger and pushed the weapon aside. "Dear," he said with a chuckle, "if I wanted to hurt anyone here..."

"I would have done so already...

His face darkened as his grin widened, revealing pink gums.
