Chapter four

"You do know the tournament starts today?" Arthur says to Merlin who is confused which way the chest plate goes on Arthur. "You nervous?" I ask Arthur passing another piece of Armour to Merlin. "I don't get nervous." I roll my eyes at his response. Merlin ties on Arthurs cape and gives Arthur his helmet looking pretty pleased with himself. Arthur and I share a look and Arthur says "Aren't you forgetting something? My sword."

"Oh, yeah. Yeah, sorry. Guess, uh, you'll be needing that." I giggle at my idiotic brother and leave.

The king starts his speech. "Knights of the realm, it's a great honour to welcome you to a tournament at Camelot. Over the next three days, you will come to put your bravery to the test, your skills as warriors, and of course, to challenge the reigning champion, my son, Prince Arthur. Only one can have the honour of being crowned champion, and he will receive a prize of 1,000 gold pieces. It is in combat that we learn a knight's true nature, whether he is indeed a warrior or a coward. The tournament begins!"

Merlin and I cheer after Arthur wins again. As Arthur comes towards us another knight, Valiant walks and congratulates Arthur on his victories. after a small interaction Valiant leaves and I mutter under my breath "creep". Arthur and Merlin hear me and laugh. 

"Uh, for tomorrow you need to repair my shield, wash my tunic, clean my boots, sharpen my sword, and polish my chainmail." Arthur says to us taking off his arm guard.

I give Merlin some of my earnings so he could do my half of the work. Of course, he uses magic to clean whilst he reads so I take this extra time to daydream. we stay there in silence until I see that my cup of water is empty so just as I am about to get up and refill Gaius walks in "Are you using magic again?" Merlin and I deny this profusely, despite the evidence against us. Gaius gives a knowing look and says"I just came to tell you that supper's ready."

Merlin and I are in the armoury getting Arthurs things, suddenly we hear a hissing noise and we see valiant's shield. One of the snakes blink, I whisper to merlin to go tell Gaius about it and see if he can find anything about it in his book while I investigate. Creeping towards the shield I trace my finger along the edge of it. Suddenly something sharp was at my back turning I see valiant.

"Can I help you with something, girl?"

"Nope. I'm good. I, I was just... I was, erm, gathering my master's armour."

"Then you'd best be on your way."

"Right, yeah. No problem." I hastily exit the room and let out a small sigh of panic and relief.

I enter the tent to see a very tired merlin. Sympathising with him I said "I can handle this just have a break" Arthur looked at me 

"You shouldn't do his work for him" 

"Sire-" 

"Arthur when we are alone please call me Arthur" 

" okay Arthur, I am starting to think that you are giving me special treatment my workload isn't half as much as merlin he needs to have a break once in a while and I would be happy to cover any of the work he does"

"You are so caring y/n, to everyone, it's like even strangers mean a lot to you"

"I think we should actually start getting you ready for the tournament Arthur"

Like Gwen taught me I place on Arthur's hauberk and surcoat, followed by the gorget, vambraces, pauldron, and couter. Being almost done I reach around Arthur placing on his belt, it felt warm to be so close to him stay there savouring the feeling. too soon my bliss is interrupted by Arthur placing his hand on my shoulder. I look up to him and he looks down at me, a small blush starts to play at my cheeks. "y/n I don't think it's that hard to put on a belt"                         "yet I don't see you going it Arthur" To this Arthur scoffs. I carry on with my work by giving Arthur his dagger and sword. finally, I hand Arthur his helmet and step back to admire my art piece.
