"Did you see the shooter?" you asked Steve quietly as you were all lined up, watching Fury's operation happen before your very eyes.
The blond man nodded and rubbed the back of his neck.
"He was fast... strong, he-uh-he had a metal arm."
Natasha seemed to flinch ever so slightly at the mention of the arm and when Maria came in she turned immediately and asked for the ballistics report.
After Maria had explained the report you knew Natasha well enough to notice that something had clicked in her head. She knew something.
"He's flatlining," one of the nurses said urgently and the doctor reached for the defibrillator, hoping to restart his heart to no avail.
Nick Fury was dead.
You shook your head and were first to walk out of the room, trying to keep your emotions in check, having had time to practice since Coulson's death. After your breathing had steadied the rest joined you outside and you all took a moment in silence, for Fury.
—
"Are you sure-?"
"Yeah I'm fine," you insisted, looking at Maria who was asking you whether you wanted to say any last goodbyes. "W-We both know it didn't go nicely with Coulson so let's start and end the messy goodbyes with him."
"Okay," she said softly and lightly touched your arm while moving along through the door to inform Natasha and Steve she would need to take the body now.
You waited for them to exit the room where you'd hopefully regroup and figure out what the hell was going on.
"Why was Fury in your apartment?" Natasha asked Steve as soon as they stepped out of the room.
"I don't know," Steve said in a very unconvincing manner and Natasha chuckled.
"You're a terrible liar you know."
"Cap, (L/N)," Rumlow interrupted your conversation. "They want you both back at the Triskelion now,"
"Give him a minute," you told the STRIKE agent to which he responded,
"Now," in an irritated manner.
"Watch your tone there Rumlow, you're speaking to a higher level officer." you shot back and he quieted while Steve quickly gathered his things and made a quick stop before heading out of the building with you.
Once you were back at the Triskelion, they took you both directly to the office of Secretary Pierce, the man who did most of SHIELD's correspondence with the world security council.
He went on into some long-winded explanation of how he and Fury became friends and what he had taught him and Steve could tell you were getting bored and tried to keep his composure about it until he finally got to the point.
"Captain Rogers, you were the last one to see Fury alive and I don't think that was a mistake," he said solemnly. "Is there anything he told you that might be of use to us? To find out who killed him?"
"He told me not to trust anyone," Steve said plainly.
"I hate to interrupt Secretary Pierce, but why am I here then?" you asked.
"As I understand it after the death of Agent Coulson you worked directly under Fury for the past few years, along with Commander Hill."
"Yes sir," you nodded.
"You were even up for a promotion is that correct?"
"Yes sir," you repeated with a nod.
"You were one of the only people Fury trusted, we just want to make sure we cover our bases. Now is there anything either of you can say to help us?"
